What? No, I love Neil Young. He’s on my list. I was saying fair enough for him to agree with 34/35 names on my list lol

To clarify I am a vocalist and guitarist that approaches music in much the same way Dave does, I don't care about being a top tier guitar player, I do obsess over vocals and my overall goal is to be effective. I can look at a vocalist and understand what they are doing technique wise to a greater degree than most people who have never studied vocals, but I think it's a slippery slope when you start saying non-musicians can't speak to a musicians creativity and their appreciation is narrow. Maybe in comparison to a musician, but generally speaking I think a lot of people get blown away by creativity and have nothing but appreciation whether or not they can articulate what it is they are picking up on.

I'm not a musician, but surprised Eric Krasno doesn't get more respect

I was referring to their appreciation of technique can be narrow. Non-musicians often over/underrate technique assuming faster and/or flashier is “better”. This happens at DMB and D&T shows all of the time. RaShawn plays a harmonically sophisticated line that is complex and expressive, but it’s the easy fast valve trills get the crowd cheering. A lot of people think Ms Swift is creative...

They call themselves Rolling Stone, and get far too much credit.

    Any list without:

    Duane Allman
    Stevie Ray Vaughan

    Is an incomplete list

Obviously you're being a cheeky monkey.

However, Dave is definitely one of my favorite guitarists of all time, along with Tim. His rhythm playing on those early still makes my fingers stumble...not that I've ever spent much time learning their tunes until this summer.

His approach is so different anything that I listened to or played for the years before discovering DMB. But it was a few years before he came out that I ditched the notion of coping any individual musician's style. I've let things become part of my play by osmosis. That said I used to be decent, but I haven't dedicated any real time to playing for almost two decades.

Part of my problem is that I love the music created by others too much to not listen to it or not want to listen to it so I can try to create my own. Add to that falling in love, needing to make a living, and starting a family (increasing the importance of the former) and playing music became less important. But I could and did still listen to tons of music.

No one plays or writes quite like Dave, but it's not the uniqueness that gets me, it's the quality of the songs. Again, definitely one of my favorite guitarists, singers, songwriters, musicians, and performers.

Oh, he's one of my favorite guitarists of all time too.

Conceding that Dave may not be one of the greatest of all time is not mutually exclusive with conceding that he's still my favorite. My favorite baseball player isn't necessarily great, but he's still my fave. It's all subjective.

dave isn’t the greatest guitarist in his own band. i think it would be a different conversation if we were talking strictly about acoustic guitarists

Dave is unbelievably talented when it comes to playing difficult clean/articulate rhythm guitar while singing beautifully.

Re: Dave's Rank In "Greatest Guitarists Of All Time"

Personally, I would rank Dave extremely high on the All Time list. He was pretty much single handedly responsible for the acoustic guitar returning to the forefront in big pop bands in the 90´s. He has since been copied probably more than any other acoustic guitar player. Also, he is one of the only actually succesful pop singers/songwriters to have a unique guitar style. There just aren´t many of those around, and never was. A couple of dozen, but that´s it. He was a little bit to acoustic guitar what Kurt Cobain was to electric guitar. And although Cobain was not a proficient guitarist, he is still one of the best of all time, as judged by pretty much every guitar magazine of the last 20 years. And it´s not because of his abilities, but because of his influence and approach. Dave is a similar case. And one more point: Dave´s groove/rhythm/timing on the guitar is unique and second to none.

he's a master at his style; i'm amazed at how his fingers can move off his weird chord structures, but i don't think he's a greatest of all time
