DMB Release Chronology: A Listening Adventure

Cptn. Monkeyman and I have been talking about putting together a list of official releases that is a timeline of the band, and then listening to the sound evolution through the releases. So instead of listening to the Live Trax series in order, you would start from 1991 and go through 2018. Sure you can do this already with your library of tapings but we admittedly got bored and put this list together just for shits and giggles.

I included a couple important dates/shows for you to listen to the tapings/recordings because they aren't official releases.

If you notice something missing that got released via some third party then feel free to fill in the gap. I did not include any various webcast rips but that can be something to be added as well.

If you want the word doc. with the list message me and I will email you, it was too large to attach here.

Without further adieu, enjoy!

I wouldn't call 9/24/17 an official release no matter how good quality the captured stream was.

One user here, Chumlee67, keeps a pretty extensive list of everything officially released:

What would be really cool is if people listened to each of these and wrote some kind of review for each one while including their opinions/observations of the 'evolution' they are noticing. In other words, Boyd started to fall off in 2000, etc. Or Stefan really started to improve on X song in year X.

Good call, I was putting this together at 2 a.m. and going off the Wikipedia list of official releases. Sorry about that!

I will check out our fellow Ants' list in the future!

That's what I was kind of hoping for out of this, when do you first start noticing changes in songs/jams/lyrics/playing style/quality.

    Would love this.

I would participate but I don't own any LT that I'm aware of.. Embarrassing to say that but yeah.

Through Spotify you have the first 20 LTs alone.

Yeah, this is kind of the idea. I wasn't planning on doing any write ups, more just mental notes.

I tried listening this way once, and while it is cool to hear the evolution over time in that way, I got major fatigue from 1995-1996. All great releases on their own but there's not close to enough diversity in those sets to listen to them all in a row, for me at least.

Very true, that's over 50 hours of music which is being played in pretty much the same manor.

Listen to the Warehouse stop-time intro evolution between Live Trax 21, Live at Red Rocks, and Live Trax 5.

This might be cool — pick a song like Two Step, #41, LIOG, Warehouse, etc., something long that has been around since the first few years, and see its evolution over time.

The Warehouse one is more interesting to me because it's an evolution of the intro in over three weeks.

Just look at Two Step...those Griesar renditions were phenomenal...a little all over the place on the back end but that's the beauty of it.

I also like to see how songs pick up some lyrics that stick and would eventually be a part of the studio edition.

I did this a couple years ago and inserted Warehouse disc tracks in their chronological order. I have a big spreadsheet to track the order and I added notes about particular songs/shows that stood out to me.

    Was a fun project.

I started back at the beginning last fall w/o the Warehouse tracks this time, just LT and DMBLive. It's a fun way to listen to the band.

This is a very cool thread. Back in about 2003 i downloaded and listened to every one of there live recorded shows from 91-2002. It was an amazing experience, My heavy listening has dwindled down throughout the last few years, i will just listen to the shows i attended mostly. My favorite years from 1991-2002 were 1993,1995,1998,2000.

Re: DMB Release Chronology: A Listening Adventure

Anyone else notice the odd things from Boyd in the first 2 shows on here from 1992? In the 7.28 show Boyd says something like "I love Dave Matthews passionately and I don't care who the fuck knows" and Dave basically shrugs it off...then in the 11.11 show you hear Dave jokingly yell at him between songs "Get the hell out of here/off me Boyd" as if he was grabbing/hugging/humping him...never noticed it until today, seems about right by modern standards.

I went through your list and I actually caught a few errors in my list, so thank you for doing this, the bolded below are either comments or missign shows.

Yeah I flubbed on a couple of things, the Boyd show should have been marked as "not official," and that D&T show should not have been in there.

IDK how I missed Blue Note because that is one of my fav Dmblive releases.

And thank you for your master list, that thing is a real treasure.

It happens, but lists like this help everyone out and keep everything in check.

Since you're thanking me, I need to thank ZackR for starting the list, I have simply taken over. Happy to keep it going though!

Re: DMB Release Chronology: A Listening Adventure

I'd like to give a shout out to chumlee and zackr as well. Ya'lls list helped me track down my collection and I really appreciate it. This list that Blunts has put together has a bit of a different purpose, it's more of a listening guide, a compact reference. Not as much of a complete collection database like your list. Both lists are very helpful and appreciated.

Thanks for the work guys, Chumlee67, ZackR, DMBlunts

The early shows are quite funny Dave, Roi, and Boyd are very vocal and funny on the microphones between songs. The 93 show from Winston Salem college is epic. they have some great banter on that one. The show itself is very very good.
