Re: In need of some golf tips...

Testaverde: wow I forgot how Gannon is an unforgiving track, have played plenty of harder courses in terms of technical shots but Gannon is like playing in Willowdale. Ass officially kicked physically.

Got in 9 on Friday and had a 42 and 18 yesterday with another 88. Pretty satisfied so far.

i have yet to play there. i went there for the first time ever last summer for a family event in the clubhouse. i was pleasantly surprised by the "look" of the whole place. kind of a diamond in the rough considering its zip code my wife's cousin plays there a bunch and i gotta play a round with him there some time

Nice yeah it's just really rugged, playing Bradford on Saturday which isn't exactly a favorite. Everything around here has changed to booking tee times online and the better tracks are filled up pretty early, just have to keep ahead of it.

Haven't been out because of the weather, but got out Sunday and shot 88 for the third time in a row on three different courses. Starting to see a strong trend.

Playing for the first time this year on Tuesday. Need to get to the range some time prior to that to get some rust off.

Thanks TS. Not where I want to be, but not too bad. Feel I can legitimately knock off about 4 or 5 shots a round. Then I'll feel better.

First round out this year…played Sagamore Hampton in southern NH…shot a 38-47. Front 9 i felt like i could do no wrong. Even my mistakes were good

Tee shot on 10 went OB and i had a feeling it was an omen…struggled to hit the fairway on the remaining holes and i had to scramble to save par if i was lucky enough

Finally began feeling comfortable with my swing adjustments after a strong couple of months of consistent practice. Shot 79 a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with some tendinitis in my knee from running and have to shut it down for a couple of months. Hopefully I can still work on short game, but don't think I'll swing a club for a while. Sucks.

I’m in search of a new set of clubs. I started with a couple of sets my grandfather gave me years ago… mixed bag of pings, etc. I need something from this generation. Lol. I’m left handed so it’s hard to go out and try stuff. No one really carries lefty clubs. So, I’m looking for recommendations. What’s good for a casual player?

That’s a good idea though… can we call it Portsmouth though so I don’t have to admit that Greenland exists?

    Haha yes!

If it means anything I live in Salem, MA and everything in my bag is from getting fit from him and buying there. He's excellent and will get you the right clubs, I'm also left handed, for golf anyway.

Perfect conditions yesterday. Nothing like a sunny morning, firm fairways and freshly mown greens. Shot 82 to top it off.

Not a bad day for hitting about 5 balls prior to teeing off. They were the only 5 I had hit all season. I made 7 pars on a course I had not seen before. Gil Hanse design and in typical fashion, the architecture was totally over the top. Half of the approach shots were blind (you could see the top of the flag stick but not the surface) and half of the tee shots were blind. Hazards and unplayable areas everywhere. I think I lost 5 balls. Not sure why anyone would want to play a course like that regularly but it was nice to get out finally.

I don't get the design concept of making the course so difficult. I mean who enjoys getting beat up for 18 holes? I don't mind having tough holes or risk/reward holes, but difficult for the sake of difficult makes not sense to me.

Every time I go play a course that was built in the past 40 years I leave not wanting to come back. I grew up playing courses that were built in the early 1900's and they are so much better and more enjoyable than modern courses. The course I played yesterday was built in 1999 in Chester County PA, where there is plenty of money. It was meant to be a private club. It is now semi-private. Memberships are around 2K per year and there are plenty of public tee times available in a daily basis. No one wants to play it.

Living in chester county myself, can you tell me which course it was?

Took the little man out for the first time yesterday (Whitford) nothing but smiles the whole time. He's only 2.5 yrs old but he hit a few shots with his plastic clubs and loved cruising in the cart.

Innescrone. The only reason we went is that my son is playing the Philly Am qualifier there on Saturday. Whitford is a gem! Love that course.
How old is your son? It's never too early to start him. At age 4, I would take my son to the range and putting green all the time, at age 5 he would carry his bag and play 9 holes...next year he will be playing at a D1 school.

So, I haven’t played in probably close to 10 years other than hitting the range once in awhile, and I no longer have my old, shitty clubs.

I have some buddies now who started heading out once a week or so and I’d like to get back into golf.

Are there are complete club sets that are decent enough quality that do cost a fortune? Or what’s my best approach? I need a bit longer than standard length since I’m 6’3”. Probably +1/2”.

I have some buddies now who started heading out once a week or so and I’d like to get back into golf.

Are there are complete club sets that are decent enough quality that do cost a fortune? Or what’s my best approach? I need a bit longer than standard length since I’m 6’3”. Probably +1/2”.
Hey, Rodey. If price is not object, get whatever you want

Seriously though, if off the rack stuff isn't going to fit you, I'd check out some local fitters and see what they have available. I'm sure they will have a range of price options, just let them know what you're looking to spend. If you plan on staying with the game, a little extra $ will go a long way.

Are there any complete sets that are worth getting as opposed to piecing a bag together?

Playing Whistling Straits right now. My dad was on track to break 40 on the front until a double on 9.
