Re: What guitar of Daveís do you miss the most?

I miss the Taylor 914ce the most. It was a good looking axe, and I loved itís tone.

I really miss the Taylor 12 string too. That was a beautiful damn guitar. Lucky too see this bad boy in 2013 and 2014 a few times before it was retired.

The Chet is iconic but itís not my favorite tone in the world I guess. But it fit itís era really well.

the dm3md is the best looking guitar on the list IMO. The tone actually sounds muddy in the full band setting tho. If that makes any sense?

Same thing with the Taylor 714 that he used in 2000. Really nice looking guitar, but a bit muddy sounding.

None of these will ever see the light of day again unfortunately. At least for full band purposes. (I think he used the Martin for the late show performance this summer)

I may be biased because Listener Supported is my favorite thing the band has ever put out - studio or live - but I love the tone of the guitar. I realize the guitar itself is not responsible for the LS jazzier sound they had back in the day, but still. DM3MD definitely for me

Taylor 914 for me.... the majority of shows I have seen live (including during my "formative years", I guess you could say) he was using that one. I thought it sounded great.

People actually miss the Chet? That thing sounded terrible. Taylor 914 all the way, his sound on CP is immaculate and it is his best guitar.

It's gotta be the 914 man. Taylor all the way! But, I am biased. I own an 814 myself and it's my favorite guitar I currently own or have ever owned. In a live, full band mix, it's just the bees knees.

I like the DM3MD years as well, though.

    Taylor 914CE & Taylor W65
914CE had a beautiful pickup tone and was deeper while still able to be heard against all of the other instruments. I like his Rockbridge guitars, but they sound like the treble is too high and lack a completely natural guitar sound when he plays them live. Might just be the pickups he uses.

Yeah I like bassy and powerful acoustic guitars as opposed to more treble and jangly, the 914 is a beautiful guitar and fit in with the band perfectly but Dave sounded amazing with the Martin's solo and for D&T

Exactly. Taylors don't have a loud, boomy bass, It's a tight, punchy bass. People often say Taylors are "too bright" because of this, but that's not that case at all. Perfect for retaining low end yet sitting well in the mix of a live band like DMB.

I would definitely agree. Martins, especially of the dreadnought variety like the HD-28, are the kind of acoustic that has a larger bass frequency, and more "boom". So, when it's just Dave, or D&T, it's the ideal guitar to take up more sonic real estate in that more stripped-down environment.

It's never mattered. The songs still sounded awesome when he was playing Ovations, a Takamine, the Lakewood(s), etc. The Chet was the live sound for the "big" era and the Taylors during the height of their popularity and success....so they are the "sounds" that are most familiar regardless of how good or bad they are perceived by our individual or even group ears.

The Rockbridge guitars sound excellent though, so I don't miss anything. Especially this tour, where you can hear Dave more clearly than the previous couple of DMB tours.

Wasn't he playing Corn Bread on that too at D&T shows in 2007?

Yea his tone this past year was pretty darn good, IMO. In the sense that he was actually audible. It was hard to hear him in some of the recent tours prior to 2018. I know the Rockbridges have their roots in more classic Gibson and Martin designs, but their sound is a good mix between those kinds of sounds and those of something more modern, like a Taylor.

Re: What guitar of Daves do you miss the most?

i use 3 of these guitars on a regular basis (dm3md, Chet, W65) in full band and acoustic settings. The Martin is an incredible instrument, but as someone stated above, it's not incredibly manageable in a full-band setting and gets lost in the mix. While the Chet's tone is not ideal, it's ability to give Dave a ton of volume without any feedback issues afforded him a little more expressiveness in his playing throughout it's era. Anyone have a 90s 914C they want to part with?

The setting is a huge factor. A guitar that works w/ D&T may not be good w/ the band and vice versa. That said the Rockbridges are being used in every setting and sounded excellent in 2017 and 2018.

I actually like the way it looks.

Also, maybe it's just my ears playing tricks on me, but I think the jumbo is giving him some more projection in the mix as well.

Voted Martin since I really miss it in d&t. The deeper tones/bass can't be matched with the Taylors and Rock
