Re: Annual Warehouse Package
Kind of a middle-of-the-road Warehouse collection in my opinion. I usually listen to these things and (not saying whether I like/dislike a song) compare the tracks to what has previously been released. Here's my 2 cents:
#40 - Too short to complain that it took the place of anything. But nowhere near other versions we have.
Beach Ball - No versions are as good as the 2009 full ones. But this is still enjoyable. This one is pretty similar to the truncated one from the Come Tomorrow bonus disc. Boyd and the horns might be more prominent on this version (and Tim a little less), so take your pick.
Stay or Leave - For those that say these collections are a dart throw, enter exhibit A. One of my least favourite released versions of this song. The tempo really seems to be dragging towards the finish. If you're looking for a version that you might hear what Buddy adds, look elsewhere. I think he even took a piss break during this version.
Black and Blue Bird - Just 5 days difference between this and the other version we have from Alpine/Live Trax 36. So the arrangement is the exact same. But I found this version to just be cleaner sounding. And they didn't scrub/mute Boyd. You can clearly hear what he's adding to the song on this version. Nothing earth shattering from him, but not terrible.
SpaceBread - Comparing this to the other 2 sets version we have (Live Trax 52), I remember people thinking that Spaceman was unique because of the drum solo and Boyd's playing during the chorus. You lose the drum solo on this version. But you keep Boyd's presence, and it's a more inspired version (Rashawn's solo included). CornBread is standard here. I think the Live Trax 52 version is more unique maybe with what the horns are doing during the solo. So I would say the best 2 sets Spacebread would be this Spaceman --> Live Trax 52 CornBread.
Minarets/Typical/#36/Ants - A great collection of segues (classic tunes); buuuttttt if you own the DMBLive series, none of these versions will be approaching your favourites. There are much better ones out there.
So whether you like these songs or not, hopefully many will find it nice to hear Boyd somewhat prominently (especially those that believe he's being scrubbed). If anything, he's brought more forward in this collection
