Re: New Music Documentary on Woodstock 99
Watched it last night and thought it was rather disappointing. Agreed on Moby hahaha. Geez, you'd think the fans were storming the stages and attacking the artists the way he talked about it.
I remember the weekend of Woodstock 99 well. Even in OH it was one of the hottest weekends that year. I was camping with some buddies that weekend while listening to the show when we could. I'm sure shit went down, but the narrative would make you believe this was one of the most disastrous events in music history. Sounded like it was poorly planned and executed, but the dramatic build throughout the movie was very anticlimactic in the end. There's this big build up with dramatic music throughout the entire movie and in the end they set some fires, the fire department came and put them out, and the police showed up and everyone went home quietly, the end.
Over 300,000 people in attendance and 44 arrests? Seems like a pretty insignificant number, but maybe 1 is too many. I also don't mean to discount the kid that died, or what I'm sure amounted to terrible treatment of women. Holy smokes that dude had some real brass to sit there and blame women for walking around naked. "Did they think they weren't going to get touched?"...wow, what an incredibly stupid thing to say. In the end it seemed like it was a giant frat party that didn't go as well as it could have, but when you see how many people are in that crowd I think it's even more amazing there were only two people that died (one of which had a previously existing heart condition) and there weren't more serious injuries and arrests. Obviously bringing in bands like Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock and Korn was probably not the right choice for the weekend. Watching that segment on Limp Bizkit reminded me how much I hated that band and Fred Durst. Jesus, and Kid Rock, what a fucking joke that guy is.
Saw that Rolling Stone called Dave out for the titties comment in their list of terrible things about Woodstock 99. I've been watching and listening to that set for 22 years and not once did I think twice about that comment. Were there not a ton of women flashing their chests the entire weekend? I'm sure it's not something artist like DMB see every day. That has been taken WAY out of context.
I'll always love that DMB set though.
