Saw the doc yesterday. Thought they did DM dirty.

Seemed to imply by him commenting on the titties that he was condoning SA.

Just watched it. I was 14 at the time and remember how bad it was. A family friend of ours had his 21-22 year old son go to the festival and I heard a lot about the expensive water and general mayhem from him. The organizer blaming women for getting raped was a nice touch, what an asshole.

I watched it. It was terrible. It was a very disingenuous take on Woodstock 99, and then it ended with somehow a mild sales pitch for Coachella.

It was a little disingenuous to edit in that clip of DM on Friday morning where they put it. But it surely didn't age well.

It's also understandable that at a festival of that size that not every attendee shared a similar, horrific experience.

That being said — what a disaster. Fuck those organizers. Can't believe 20+ years later they're still defending this abomination of a weekend.

i mean i survived and i wasn't dehydrated or starving or anything. One thing that did happen is we left in our car Saturday morning just to get some food and drinks and they wouldn't let us back in. i guess once you parked you couldn't leave. Not sure how they even knew we were returning and not just getting there. But we had to park on someone's lawn (there were locals trying to make money on their own parking) and walked back in.

I couldn't believe that dude actually came out and said that! It is nice to see the organizers learned nothing and would happily do it again.
What fascinated me was the behind the scenes press conferences, where they are basically just waiting for the whole thing to blow up and are pretending they have no clue.

I didn't really view that as mysoginistic or anything, more of Dave just being funny. He was making an observation that there were a lot of titties, and it's a little different maybe if that was on Saturday though maybe. I mean that seemed like a real fucking shit show.

i just watched the doc, and now I'm watching DMB's set on YouTube. They're so young. but they sound so good!

i was 16 during Woodstock 99 and my friend and I split the cost of PPV and watched it all weekend. i had never seen such "an abundance of titties" before, or since.

Yes Dave was just doing what he does. That dmb set was very good. I was right near the front for the whole thing. Somehow i survived that whole day and night. The documentary really made the whole thing sound like a disaster. I didn't really think that at the time. It was rough but i loved all the music and didn't mind walking from stage to stage.

Re: New Music Documentary on Woodstock ‘99

Watched it last night and thought it was rather disappointing. Agreed on Moby hahaha. Geez, you'd think the fans were storming the stages and attacking the artists the way he talked about it.

I remember the weekend of Woodstock 99 well. Even in OH it was one of the hottest weekends that year. I was camping with some buddies that weekend while listening to the show when we could. I'm sure shit went down, but the narrative would make you believe this was one of the most disastrous events in music history. Sounded like it was poorly planned and executed, but the dramatic build throughout the movie was very anticlimactic in the end. There's this big build up with dramatic music throughout the entire movie and in the end they set some fires, the fire department came and put them out, and the police showed up and everyone went home quietly, the end.

Over 300,000 people in attendance and 44 arrests? Seems like a pretty insignificant number, but maybe 1 is too many. I also don't mean to discount the kid that died, or what I'm sure amounted to terrible treatment of women. Holy smokes that dude had some real brass to sit there and blame women for walking around naked. "Did they think they weren't going to get touched?"...wow, what an incredibly stupid thing to say. In the end it seemed like it was a giant frat party that didn't go as well as it could have, but when you see how many people are in that crowd I think it's even more amazing there were only two people that died (one of which had a previously existing heart condition) and there weren't more serious injuries and arrests. Obviously bringing in bands like Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock and Korn was probably not the right choice for the weekend. Watching that segment on Limp Bizkit reminded me how much I hated that band and Fred Durst. Jesus, and Kid Rock, what a fucking joke that guy is.

Saw that Rolling Stone called Dave out for the titties comment in their list of terrible things about Woodstock 99. I've been watching and listening to that set for 22 years and not once did I think twice about that comment. Were there not a ton of women flashing their chests the entire weekend? I'm sure it's not something artist like DMB see every day. That has been taken WAY out of context.

I'll always love that DMB set though.

    doc was triflin
-- wholly liable-free [I ❤️ the late-] 90's retrospective; nothing like journalist Steven Hyden's irresistible/true-crime Break Stuff: The Story of Woodstock '99, 2019, 8-part podcast, it's supposedly [based on] pantomiming.

Bill Simmons hot dogged that project's publicity & popularity, supplemented every other segment with anthropological vignettes, and completely bypassed Hyden's essential investigative narrative; thereby allowing charlatan extraordinaries, John "so-goddamn-glib" Scher & (especially) Michael Lang, to totally skate [again].

they could've just culled all of MTV's Dave Holmes bits (from Hyden podcast; for entire runtime) and still have something more interesting/entertaining/appealing than this trivial 'n trite nonsense.

    example:
podcast's backstage anecdotal: show-opener James Brown tried to hold-up the show, demanding more money, mere minutes before taking the stage (and how easily promoters were able to sidestep Brown & his management's threats in the era of pre-cellular comms/relay) was infinitely more compelling than the '99 concertgoer who couldn't recall Hendrix playing guitar at WS'69.
Approx 88% of the doc is focused-on or features concertgoers (opposed to the actual concert).

Just watched the documentary. Brought back a lot of bad memories from being there. I was only 20 at the time and thought then that this is what a war zone would look like? I was so far back from the stage when Dave went on. When Limp went on, it was total destruction. Really was scary

What a crazy shitshow. I had some interest in going, but living in California, that wasn't likely to happen. I do remember hearing that water was expensive, and then unavailable. When a friend let me know we should to the local festival, I was a bit hesitant knowing what happened at Woodstock 99, but decided to go to the first Coachella, and had a blast. Not only did we get the free water there, I think they sold water for like $2 a bottle.

    44 arrests
Some NFL games with less than a quarter of the attendees have more arrests than that.
