I don't know why so many people on here haven't learned that just because you don't like a song, doesn't mean that it's shit, or that everyone should hate it.
Most people want to have their opinions validated, but in this sites case it leads to a lot of groupthink.

Like what you like, hate what you hate, and be able to defend why. (most people miss that last part).

Not really. IMO it's very sub-par for this band

No one should have to "defend" anything. (most people miss that part)

Yes, you should. Or do your own decisions mean nothing to you? If you can't at least back up your own thoughts in a rudimentary way, then why did you make the decision or form your opinion in the first place?

A person's opinions are ultimately decided by themselves. Proving or defending or justifying them to someone else is irrelevant. My favorite color is red and nothing you say is going to make me think blue is better. Sweet has awful lyrics and abysmal music and nothing you say is going to change Dave's lyrics or the bands writing.

you did well with the color part and then completely did a 180 on the second go around. nothing will change your opinion of the song. what you state is an attempt at saying your opinion of the quality of the song is factual, which is impossible.

Ok, some things are indefinable. My favorite color is Green (except for when it is blue or red) and like you I cannot define why (except for the red, you gotta root for your team...even when they lose). But liking or not liking a specific song is not something that is inherently indefinable, IMO. Even if it is just a feeling you get that influences how you perceive the song, that is a reason to like/hate the song.

I'm not trying to change your opinion, but here is why I like this song. I like the musical flow of the song from a simple strumming pattern to a full band jam. I like the transition and how that is handled in the song, and I like the vocal melody. I think the lyrics aren't Dave's best but IMO they work for the song as a whole. I also read a little more into the words than the "kid learning to swim" direct interpretation.

On a scale of 1-10 I would rate the song a 6-7. By no means is it a classic in my mind, but it is a good song that I enjoy listening to.

Also, on the bolded; if you had sad that nothing would change your opinion, that would be fine (and accurate as far as I would know). But the way you worded it makes it seem like you are stating facts, which is not right. music is subjective, the most you can have is an opinion.

You find Sweet's metaphors more relate-able, right? Explaining that to me isn't going to make me like them more. It's just you justifying yourself, which to me, is unnecessary considering I'm not attempting to convince you of anything. We're both simply stating if we enjoy a song or not.

I think they're one in the same. Color and music are both art, just in different ways. The reason(s) person x likes one color and person y likes a different one can be from preference, relate-ability, interpretation, aesthetics, etc. The reason(s) person y likes a song and person x doesn't can be from preference, relate-ability, interpretation, sound, etc. But it comes back to being personal and about someone's own perception, which for me isn't going to be affected by another's reasoning. Which ultimately makes "defending" yourself irrelevant.

Unless someone is fickle or a sheep, I guess. And a lot of dmbc is occupied by at times.

Maybe "defending" is a bad word. Most of the time I'm not trying to change someones opinions. But it is much more interesting to read someones reasoning and perceptions than the following...

    "Song x sucks donkey balls"

"Nuh uh, Song x is great"

"Youre stupid and a noob (some douche statement about how long they have been on this site"

"Youre a bitter old walrus fart!"

"inherently cynical and jaded comment about how songs we haven't heard yet will be shitty"

    etc...

For the record, the post I quoted of yours is much more interesting to me b/c you got into your reasoning a bit (not on the song, but on reasoning in general)

Not directed at you. Many people/posts in dmbc are the "trying to change someone's opinion", whether the poster realizes they're doing it or not. So when someone else sees it and gets upset, that's when the bickering really begins. Posting your opinion doesn't mean you're attempting to convince anyone of anything. Again, not directed at you.

you make no sense. you did defend and justify why you don't like sweet. and furthermore, there would be no need for a message board if people did not explain why they like or dislike anything about the band.

You're one of those pathetic people who thinks opinions are "right or wrong". That's why your input is worthless.

I've always accepted the fact you like turds such as Sweet. You're proof awful people like awful songs. Clearly you still go from rattled to butthurt in a matter of seconds when someone points out lackluster DMB, though.

clearly, someone who lives on the internet has the life experience to identify with a song like Sweet.
