I wasn't entertained at all, which is saying a lot for a J.C. Chandor movie starring Oscar Isaac. Supremely disappointed is more like it.

the first half of the movie was solid. the second half was mostly terrible. it's like it didn't know what it wanted to be. tonally all over the place.

He went through phases, not unlike Carlin. He evolved and was at times ahead of the curve. There was almost always some biting social commentary, introspection, discussion of the human condition, etc. It wasn't traditional comedy, at least that for which he's most known. He was also pushing boundaries, not the least of which was trying to truly exercise free speech...which landed him in jail on occasion.

So, it kind of depends. There are a fair amount of clips you can watch or listen to on uToob. Some falls into the realm of traditional stand up some are the ramblings of a junky...with a huge of grey area between the two.

Captain Marvel was enjoyable. Above-average MCU flick.

That de-aging tech is getting really nuts.

Ben should have directed, this movie had no idea what it was and that’s a direction issue.

I Smile Back - A middle-class mother can no longer handle her secret life of drugs, etc.. Sarah Silverman did a great job.

The Mule - An old guy begins to transport drugs for a Mexican cartel to make ends meet/amends. Solid story, good cast. Eastwood still has it.

Bohemian rhapsody - so average, lacked any real depth or point of view, no insight. I love biopics but this one fell flat. And the portrayal of Freddie mercury failed to capture his magic or flaws and became annoying by the end of the movie. This and the fact that parts of the movie were made up mean

Black klansman - also average. A little boring, didn’t really hit its mark on capturing what the times were like back then, seemed like a school play. Spike lee did some tricks that ultimately fell on deaf ears because the whole movie was flat. One

    Both were a let down.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Bohemian Rhapsody - really loved all the musical numbers and felt Malek and Lee were truly great in their roles. Lots of liberties taken, I didn't really care as this was more about the Live Aid performance to me and really Queen and then to a slightly lesser degree u2 are still to this day the acts that came out of Live Aid with everyone going "holy fuck". Loved the pub scene clapping along, Hollyweird at its best. Audio mixing in the Live Aid show was so good, and if you watch their real Live Aid performance just after you'll see how close they got, truly amazing. One thing I thought was odd, the order of performance was u2, Dire Straits and then Queen. You see Queen walking up the plank just before going on and what looks like u2 coming down, you hear Dire Straits earlier in the dressing/waiting area. They made it look like u2 came off just before them when it was Dire Straits rocking out Money for Nothing (with Sting) > Sultans of Swing. The Ultra HD Blu-ray features the entire Live Aid performance recreation they did, not all of which made the movie, so that's a great extra on the home video release.
    8.5/10

A Star is Born - musical numbers/performances and acting were superb all round, but felt the story was presented in such a fractured jumpy manner than it took away from what could have been an absolutely amazing picture. And you're going to deck someone in a police bar on the first date? Just seemed really a bit odd here and there. The opening scene in Dolby Atmos was fucking great.
    7.5/10

Ralph Breaks the Internet - with the exception of the finale, I really enjoyed this one. Some great retro gaming references as with the first, stunning animation and some incredibly funny scenes. I was pretty blown away that all the modern princesses dating back to 1989's The Little Mermaid were voiced by their original actors. And the friendly jab at Pixar after Kelly Macdonald's Merida says a line had me howling.
    8/10

All Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K disc rentals.

Overall enjoyed all three but probably not enough to buy any of them or watch them again soon.

Picked up the new Ultra HD Blu-ray of this one, newly scanned at 4K resolution and newly mastered with HDR. Holy fuck what a flick. The fine detail is tremendous, the new Dolby Atmos track really opens everything up over the already great 5.1 mix from the older Blu-ray and the HDR coding and new color space has everything looking so much better than ever seeing it before. I don't care to rewatch the other two movies, as good as the action sequences in part 2 hold up today, but the original is a fantastic standalone film.

I will reserve my spot in IMAX with Laser the second it becomes available.

Seeing true 1.43:1 IMAX scenes in IMAX with Laser is unlike any other cinematic experience I've ever had.

Next one I believe is Wonder Woman 1984 - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7126948...ef_=tt_ql_dt_6

Yeah, that UHD release is perfection. I was amazed at how well the new 4K scan turned out. Movies shot on film are really getting a new lease on life with 4K because it's holding up better than all of the early digital movies.

The first month of scheduling of the Criterion Channel is detailed. Looks like they will have all of the Criterion films on it at all times with 3rd party films rotating out and with them being on the service for at least 90 days. As someone who missed out on Filmstruck, I'm pretty excited about this new service. I might go ahead and sign up and get a cheaper price than waiting for it to come out on April 8th

The Dirt. I wanted to love this movie - was a HUUUUUGE Motley Crue fan when I was a kid - but it just sort fell flat for me. Great performances by the actors but the movie itself was just way too quick (it's about 1hr45min). They could've easily added an hour of time to it and allowed some of the stories to stretch a bit. I think it may take another viewing or 2 to really appreciate it.

It's been interesting to see people who weren't big Crue fans review it... most seem to think it's great. Mike Portnoy (drummer for about a million bands) said it was better than Bohemian Rhapsody. I wouldn't go that far... but at least it seemed to follow the band's storyline more closely.

    The Dirt

Much like Crue this was slick and shallow. Nikki shooting heroin was tough to stomach, but aside from that this felt like a VH1 behind the music come to life.

It felt closer to the CBGB's movie that came out a few years ago than it did Straight Outta Compton or Almost Famous.

I still haven't seen Rhapsody, so I can't cment on how it stacks up to that.

watched Shoplifters and A Most Violent Year over the weekend.

was expecting to be a bit more engaged in Shoplifters considering all the praise it received, but I thought it was just "good", not "great".

A Most Violent Year was really good, I enjoyed the story, performances, and Chandor really did a great job directing.

Gnome Alone in our hotel room on VA Beach on Saturady night after having Beach Bully BBQ and going for a night walk along the ocean.

I'm sure this setting helped my appreciation, but it was a cute and ridiculous family movie. Milo and I really enjoyed it...my wife and Aidan were laughing here and there too (despite trying to dismiss its silliness).

    Cheers.

was expecting to be a bit more engaged in Shoplifters considering all the praise it received, but I thought it was just "good", not "great".

A Most Violent Year was really good, I enjoyed the story, performances, and Chandor really did a great job directing.
Shoplifters didn't do much for me either.

A Most Violent Year is criminally underrated, though. It's in my top 50 for the decade, and I personally would've nominated both Isaac and Chastain for an Oscar.

Watched Tag last night... completely ridiculous but also pretty damn funny.

    Vice - 3/5

Not sure where I would have put this on my list. It was just ok to kind of good. The acting was great.
