Re: I just did my taxes

Is it true that the IRS provided employers with an updated way of calculating federal tax withholding for employees based on their pay and W-4 allowances? If so, did that new method result in tax withholdings that were closer to the true amount...hence smaller refunds?

did you have kids, get a raise, or anything else?

don't see how someone would get more $ in their paychecks AND the same refund unless something changed

Unless you actively changed your withholding, then the actual $ amount withheld would not have stayed the same after February last year when the IRS issued their new withholding tables. Did you update your withholding amount to try to keep it the same as it was before the new tax law?

Woohoooo, federal tax refund is scheduled to hit my savings account on Monday.

~4 weeks since I mailed in the return (I'm a stupid Luddite and did them by hand). Not bad.

I have heard an equal amount of people saying they got more, the same, or less back than in previous years. As someone aptly said, everyone's situation will be different.

Ouch, that sucks. One year my CPA came back and said I owed like $12,000 or something and I just about had a heart attack. Turned out he made a mistake on some business income and the fix resulted in me getting a massive refund instead.

You need to change your withholding or pay quarterly estimated taxes. If you owe a lot every year, then you're also paying penalties for underpaying throughout the year. It's not enough for the IRS to get their money by April 15th. They want it paid properly throughout the year or they assess penalties.

    I just did my taxes

My accountant filed 3/25. Haven’t received anything from fed or state yet. I checked last year and I had my refund by now. What’s other’s time table been this year?

Edit: is there a way to check the status of this?

we filed on 3/6 and had our refund in less than a week, but right now it's probably backed up because of all the people doing it at the last minute

You need to know the exact amount of your refund for both.

    https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/e...fgetstatus.jsp

For state just Google “specific state” refund status.

Could take 3 weeks or longer depending on how they filed. Could take that regardless if they're getting backed up due to the April rush.

Adjusted withholding early in 2018. Getting $288 back. This is the closest I've gotten to $0 in several years, so I'm happy about that.

Anyone ever use the Turbo Tax app to do their taxes? My desktop is old the I can't get an OS that will work with TT and I can't download it on to my work laptop. While it will be annoying to do it on the phone, not sure of any other options.
