Major bummer. Pantera was quite the game changer once they figured out that incredible genre hybrid that I feel they perfected on Vulgar Display. Funny side note, years before she and I met, my wife sent Phil Anselmo a letter asking him to take her to her senior prom in the early 90s. He did not respond. Too bad for him, she's awesome!

It probably got lost in the massive amounts of requests from dudes asking him to go to prom with them.

I think Charlie Benante summed it up perfectly - if the Big 4 had a baby, it would be Pantera.

A little bit, and Pantera also has some elements they they sure didn't pick up from the Big 4. None of the Big 4 had that heavy mid tempo groove that Pantera did so well. Suicidal Tendencies was getting funkier then, Sepultura a little bit too, and Kings X was playing some really interesting non-standard rhythms. But Cowboys and Vulgar were really groundbreaking. Their later output wasn't as much my cup of tea, but based on those two albums only they deserve metal billing at least as high an Anthrax and maybe even Megadeth.

Went to a ‘Final World Tour’ Slayer show the other night. What a fucking blast. Probably the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long while. Was amazing to see how Anthrax and Slayer can still run around a stage like 20 year olds all while playing flawlessly. Great stuff! Anthrax opened with a Cowboys From Hell tease. It was awesome but I really wish they would’ve just played the whole damn song!

    Old timer here.

Took my ten year old to his first concert this summer. I took him to see Metallica with Volbeat as the opener. First, I fell in love with Volbeat. How in the world I missed this band is beyond me. I absolutely hate being late to the party but I am so happy to have found them. If you haven't heard them, check them out, you won't be disappointed.

It was a great show from start to finish from both bands. The pouring rain made the experience that much better. The best part was that we were in general admission on the floor and the nice people in the handicapped section let my son sit up there with them. We were about 30 feet from the stage and he gets to stand over the crowd with the most spectacular view in the place. Listening to cheer and head bang as Battery was raging is a memory I will take to the grave. His favorite part of the night was when they strip it down and played Seek and Destroy up at the front of the stage. He was horse from singing and cheering all night. My favorite moment was Whiplash. It brought back old memories. James Hetfield is still a god among men. Dude sounded so good.

saw a lot of kids at the Slayer show the other night. It’s kinda funny to me that a metal crowd is so much more reserved then the crowd at a DMB or other pop band show. I mean, everyone is having a great time and is fully engaged in what the band is doing rather than half the crowd being falldown drunk and stupid. It just a much more enjoyable environment and safer for kids

Was listening to Ozzy's Boneyard on Sirius the other day. It was song after song from major classic metal albums. It made me wonder what are some of today's classic metal albums? Are there even any? The only one that really comes to mind from the last decade is Mastadon's "Leviathon". Are there others?

Agreed. When I took my son to Metallica he was 7. He was getting fist bumps and high fives everywhere. People watched their language around him and seemed to enjoy watching HIM enjoy the show. Not even close to the same experience at DMB where my wife got beer spilled on her like 3 times and the couple next to us just rambled the whole show and didn't pay attention.

Last decade being 2008 to present or 2010 to present?

    Interesting question.

    Here's 10 that I'd consider modern classics:

    Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
    Meshuggah - ObZen
Between The Buried & Me - Coma Ecliptic
    Periphery - Juggernaut: Alpha
    Periphery - Juggernaut: Omega
Periphery - Periphery III: Select Difficulty
Revocation - Great Is Our Sin
    Deafheaven - New Bermuda
Tribulation - The Children of the Night
    TesseracT - Altered State

    Interesting question.
Leviathan came out in 2004 so I guess even I'm not in the present decade. But I guess I could expand it to 2000. It seems like even between 2000-2004 there were a few albums (SOAD comes to mind).

But really let's just say 2008.

I've only heard of two of those bands (Meshuggah and Deafheaven). I'm so far out of the game these days with the current metal scene.

Weird to think that Leviathan isnt even a "past decade" album anymore.

Mastodon has several albums that should be considered top tier metal albums, Leviathan, Crack the Skye, and Emperor of Sand are all excellent.

Between the Buried and Me- Coma Ecliptic and The Parallax I and II are excellent. BTBAM are my favorite current metal band now that Dillinger has called it quits. Speaking of which...

Dillinger Escape Plan- Option Paralysis, One of Us Is the Killer, and Dissociation are all great. DEP was the best live show on the planet, but now they are done and I am sad.

Animals as Leaders are incredible. Periphery is usually pretty great. If you like really heavy dark stuff Behemoth is mind blowing.

Lots of great metal out there currently, but most of it is off any mainstream radar.

I remember Behemoth. I used to rage to some Demi-God. That was a killer album.

I'm not sure how but I've really fallen off the metal map. I don't know any of the new bands or what's going on. I still love the old stuff I used to listen to though.

My tastes tend to run towards progressive death metal and I highly recommend BTBAM and Opeth. Depending on how long you've been away the Opeth albums Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed are well worth seeking out. Ghost Reveries, in my opinion, is a perfect album. Like Master of Puppets perfect. If MoP is a 100, then GR is a 99. With the move of metal back into the underground there has been a ton of new and inventive bands out, but it does make it hard to keep up.

Loved the first two albums. I felt they had a pretty steep drop off after that. But in 04 I had a pretty solid Atreyu, Thursday, Thrice, playlist going.

I've grown up with Atreyu, Silverstein, Funeral For a Friend, and Saosin. Loved them all.

A concert venue in Milwaukee has sent me free Thrice tickets on two different occasions and I've had to trash them both times because none of my friends are fans (I admittedly don't listen to them much but I'd still go).

I remember one show I went to that was nuts: Behemoth, Black Dalia Murder, Nile, King Diamond. I was moshing with a girl that lost her hearing aid halfway through a song and we got it back for her, it was fucking amazing.

Machine Head 'The Blackening' comes to mind as a 21st century 'classic', IMO.
