The Lost Decade: 7 Songs in 10 Years

AFTW is now a decade old. in the 10 years since its release, DMB has written, recorded and released 7 studio songs:

Samurai Cop
She
Virginia in the Rain
Again & Again
Black & Blue Bird
Do You Remember

Come Tomorrow

as for the other 7 Come Tomorrow songs:
• 3 were written during the Batson Sessions: Can't Stop, Idea of You, Come On Come On

• 3 are Dave solo: Here On Out, That Girl is You, When I'm Weary
• 1 is an interlude: bkdkdk

sad to say that's it... 7 DMB songs in 10 years

Well, they are 30 + years in. Not sure many bands after 20 years are doing much more. They really missed their chance post Big Whiskey to go on a new album run. Seems like once again the process of AFTW really soured them on the studio experience. You would have thought the 2011 year off would have afforded them ample time to record, but I'm sure the caravan shows kind of blew the "year off" mindset off the table. It did seem like the band was in a good/fun place during those shows though.

I remember reading an article in a guitar mag that Dave was already working on new songs in studios around Seattle in Fall of 2012! Seemed like he was anxious to get some new stuff out. I wonder what happened to any of that.

Grateful Dead was the exact same way. They only really made 2 great studio albums, but they had so many good songs that they'd keep writing even it wasn't going to get recorded. And they were finished songs, not ideas they jammed on, of course they jammed on everything but you get what I'm saying. They weren't Shotgun with gobdlegook lyrics and no real structure for 17 years.

They have likely recorded a few more (ie: Bismarck) but yeah, 7 genuinely new songs released is garbage.

I wish they'd just say, we're done recording albums. If we make one, it's a gift. But just write and record new songs for the shows, and release them on good mixes. No more hype, no more speculation. We just know, they are done recording. Similar to The Beatles announcing they were doing playing live, just opposite. I would accept this.

Agreed, we all would have liked more released output. What does the list look like if all new songs played live since then are included (don't forget Plastic Girl)? Probably not terribly impressive, but does reflect a bit more creative output.

And they're all complete shit besides Virginia in the Rain.

They've been a nostalgia act for a long time.

Do You Remember is great stuff. Same with Samurai Cop, Again And Again, and Blue & Black Bird to go along with Virginia In The Rain.

Re: The Lost Decade: 7 Songs in 10 Years

For a different perspective, to play devils advocate-

in the ten years since AFTW has been recorded DMB has written and performed 16 songs (i did this quick could be missing more):

    Samurai Cop
    She
    Virginia in the Rain
    Again & Again
    Black & Blue Bird
    Do You Remember
    Come Tomorrow
    Bismark
    Death on the High Seas
    Madmens Eyes
    Ocean and the Butterfly
    Plastic Girl
    The Only Thing
    Singing from the Windows
    Something to tell My Baby
    Walk Around the Moon

of those 16 songs i enjoy:

Samurai Cop, Virginia in the Rain, Black and Blue Bird, Again and Again, Do You Remember, Bismark, Death on the High Seas, Madmens Eyes, Ocean and the Butterfly, Singing from the Windows, Something to tell My Baby, Walk Around the Moon

Songs i could take or leave:

Come Tomorrow, The Only Thing, She

    Songs I hate:

    Plastic Girl

Still a pretty good track record if you ask me

Generally speaking bringing in STTMB and Plastic Girl to make things seem better is ill advised.

Fair enough, I guess for me even the additional songs don't move the needle that much:

    Good:
    Walk Around the Moon
    Madmens Eyes

Meh, don't really move the needle:
    Bismark
    Death on the High Seas
    Ocean and the Butterfly
    The Only Thing
    Singing from the Windows

    Bad, take them out back:
    Plastic Girl
    Something to tell My Baby

As bad as Plastic girl is lyrically and vocally, the music does have some redeeming qualities. I do enjoy the outro. There are no redeeming qualities in STTMB.

STTMB with the stringed orchestra at hollywood bowl describes perfectly how overwhelming life can be with losing your loved ones.

and he does it in a sweet short 2 minute song.

    it hits hard IMO

Re: The Lost Decade: 7 Songs in 10 Years

Actually hadn't listened to the HB STTMB. Just did. Point stands, sure it is better but strings just have a way of making a quiet song feel more lofty and sentimental. Still had the reaction towards the end where the strings cut out for a minute and Dave came back in with the three little chords that repeat over and over for the entire song, instantly reminded me that the song isn't really a song and has no foundation. The message is nice wish it were delivered in a less lazy package.

Side note: hilarious Dave mentions before the song it is a short little song so people don't have enough time to pee during it

Absolutely false. They just don't record and/or release a good amount of the songs he writes on studio albums.

I don’t get how everyone isn’t in love with ocean butterfly.

It’s one of the few songs that sound like classic dmb’s percussive acoustic sound. Airy, jazzy, room for a nice jeff and or buddy solo. It’s perfection with this lineup.

Reminds me of proudest monkey but written for this version of the band.

Funny you mention that comparison cuz I would put Proudest Monkey in a similar category. Has potential to be a nice studio track I guess and nothing terribly wrong with the song but it does nothing for me live and sucks the energy out of the place.

Borderline -1s for me when rating sets. If a set is already off to a slow start and has that "can't get off the ground" feeling and you stick in something like LITHOG/PM/OATB type songs I begin to view it as a bad set.

Re: The Lost Decade: 7 Songs in 10 Years

i put it in more of a PFWYG category

Live setting? probably wouldnt be looking to hear it that often

do i like the song when im listening to it at home? Yes

does that make the song good? id say yes in that regard

I think this site often labels a song bad because it doesnt translate live, mostly with Dave solo songs, but that shouldnt always be a judgement of the song

Here on Out, Belly Full, Singing from The Windows etc- are all good songs, theyre not bad just because you see them pop up in a set and they suck the energy out of the room. The song itself is still beautifully written- just quiet. It doesnt have to always be a Two Step

Re: The Lost Decade: 7 Songs in 10 Years

Unfortunately due to crowds quiet songs live just don't pan out well. SFTW a good example of this. I remember watching it at home on the webcast, I had just seen one of the videos of someone playing music from their balcony during the pandemic, it really resonated with me that day.

Fast forward to 2021 - Dave - "singing from the windows shadow on the wa-" Drunk lady behind me- "WOOOOOO YEAH DAVE GET ITTTTTT"

So yeah I generally don't enjoy songs in that setting if I can't enjoy them.

    Agree.

I think what's always bothered me about the greater DMB crowd is that a lot of people just aren't willing to enjoy the catalog at a show. Everyone wants to hear DMB bring down the house and have every song be a banger.

At this point, I'd love to see DMB in a quiet theatre and let them play whatever they want from the catalog that they might deem to quiet for the traditional DMB fan. I don't want to rate their songs like it's a baseball game, I just want to sit back and enjoy a lovely show from one of my favorite bands.

That's just the long way of me saying I like Proudest Monkey a lot.
