Dead Wax: Dave Matthews Band

https://youtu.be/fjsapARkeJE

Dead Wax (formerly Professional Musicians React) is a YouTube show created by Jack Conte (Pomplamoose, Founder & CEO of Patreon) and Ryan Lerman (guitarist/bassist for Ben Folds Five, John Legend, many more) where they do a deep dive on an artist/producer/genre. I'm a huge fan of this show and highly recommend a binge of their videos -- it's made me look at music in a totally new way.

Anyway, they did an episode on DMB! Fantastic watch!

EDIT: John Alagia is their guest btw!!

saw this earlier today and immediately started watching. i know it isn't a surprise, but i just love seeing how quickly musicians recognize carter's brilliance. never knew about the snare switch/up syncopation at the beginning of the ants verse.

really love this breakdown. definitely recommend everyone check this out!

I really love their channel, especially since they moved away from the more clickbaity "reaction channel" direction. Excited for this one!

The Iris episode with Tim Pierce is outstanding.
Amazing how he wrote the mando and electric guitar slide solo part in a few takes.

Watched it right now, it's not really that focused on DMB, but I actually loved they put their focus on Alagia and his work. Never knew he was that production savvy

There’s some interesting DMB tidbits in there that I definitely didn’t know about; like how they recorded during COVID and how some of the live songs on Remember Two Things have overdubs on them.

Great episode! I loved how they talked about the insane guitar tuning on that song too For being such a huge pop hit, most people may not realize how cool the song is musically.

The one on Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA from a few weeks ago is really great too!

On the subject of Jack Conte, Ryan Lerman, and DMB, here's the Scary Pockets take on Crash Into Me: https://youtu.be/syGlBNVGEqU

It's worth checking out all of the Scary Pockets stuff, there's some real gems in there. For example, I'll admit with only a tiny bit of shame that I really really like their cover of MMMBop (yes, the Hanson song from the 90s).

Thought it was interesting that he said some of their demos(Dave and him) are better than final dmb versions and he thinks Dave would agree. Believe he said we may hear some of them some day.

It's an interesting picture he paints of Lillywhite in the studio. I feel like around here people see him as having a reputation for being a bit of a hard-ass. But he sounds about as goofy as Dave in some ways. Maybe also with the same perfectionist tendencies, then. Or maybe he was just mirroring Dave's drive for perfectionism, because he knew that's what his client wanted?

I think you'd have a hard time being as successful as he has been with as many artists if you take yourself too seriously. Creativity generally comes best in a positive environment, but one with definite boundaries. So, I image that he kept a strong hand on the process and helped to firmly steer things, but I do doubt that he was like a stern school teacher with no sense of humor.

For another example of it, think about Cavallo's process -- he basically said that the band would jam on one thing all day if he just let them run free. So, he said no, we'll do this one for a few minutes, and then we'll jam on something else. And from that, he got like 30-40 song ideas or snippets that they then worked on and narrowed down to what was on the album. It's possible to enforce those boundaries without having an adversarial relationship.

As far as mirroring perfectionism, take a look into Lillywhite's comments on Lee Mavers of The La's. Sounded like Mavers' perfectionism really got in the way of the work on their album, and Steve was frustrated with that. I get the opposite impression from his interviews reMB -- sounded like they always had a good relationship in studio, despite what went down the the Lillywhite Sessions (he pretty much stated directly that he was fairly shocked when he got the call that the band was moving on, since he thought it was going well despite some bumps in the road).

Definitely the thing that got me the most excited. What I wouldn’t give to get into their vault

This will be a fun watch, their episode on Bon Iver was pretty interesting.

Watched this last night. It was very enjoyable. It's nearly 30 mins but it went quick. What a position to be in, John, that is. Be Dave's buddy, be his sounding board, but not have too much responsibility in the production. We need more interviews with John. We've heard from Lillywhite and Harris. I'm sure John has a ton of neat things to share. Of note for me was John saying that they probably would release all the scrapped stuff that didn't turn into songs.

That's not quite what he said, though. He mentioned demos that he & Dave did that they both think are better than what was eventually released. That is what he said we'd probably hear one day. My understanding was that it's more alternate versions of released songs rather than stuff that's never been released.

Actually, I take it back. I just listened to that part again, and he may be talking about completely unreleased songs.

Yeah, I was under the impression that John was talking about songs we’ve never even heard before. I really hope that stuff starts trickling out soon.
