Then your two years of training mustve taught you something that these nuclear experts of 30, 40+ years dont know....because they arent going around saying this is "impossible", and that is "the worst it will get" etc etc etc. You are the only person ive seen that is so definate about everything.

Here is a map of the US and it's Nuclear Plants. I'm not sure when this was done, but I thought California had more.

But if you scroll over it shows how much of our country would be contaminated if an accident like Chernobyl happened. For people already scared it will scare the shit out of you.

I dont necessarily worry that something is going to happen in America. But I get supremely irritated when people act like there is no chance of a disaster ever happening with nuclear plants, or try to act like a problem with a nuclear plant carries the same risk of a car crash.

Well, surely all of those plants have been modernized to 2011 standards......so no need to worry. Its IMPOSSIBLE that any of those reactors could have issues. Impossible.

I'm not going to say that nuclear energy presents no risks. There is the nuclear waste issue and the fact that if something does go wrong, it goes WRONG, and you can't simply sweep those issues under the rug. They're big issues. Certainly, many, if not all of us would prefer cleaner sources of energy.

But we ourselves in a bit of a Faustian bargain. We all need energy. We need it now. Not 40 years from now, but right now. Can you live without electricity? I certainly can't. And I wouldn't want to. On a day-to-day basis, nuclear energy is a clean and efficient way to generate the energy that we need. Unelss I'm off my rocker, which I may be, solar, wind, and hydroelectric sources can't yet generate the energy we need right now in a cheap, efficient and reliable manner. Hopefully they will someday, and such courses should be pursued. But in the meantime, what's the alternative to nuclear? Coal? Natural gas? Those aren't rife with environmental issues or anything.

This is true, but if you're pointing towards wind at the current way we're doing it, then you're mistaken.

Tidal and Solar are my two go to forms of R.E. that seem to have the most potential.

If nuclear is so safe, then why are 200,000 people currently evacuated from the area around the reactor since the radiation levels are 167x higher than usual? I don't call that safe. To me it's like saying "Skydiving without a parachute is safe until you hit the ground."

For most of the time you are in the air, everything is great! You wouldn't even use the parachute if you had it. But then when you're about to hit the ground, what're you gonna do? Say "Oops, well it was safe for a while!"

How long will it be before people can inhabit Chernobyl? Who cares whether it is human error or otherwise. This is whats happening due to nuclear energy. Japan is fucked.

sarcasm from me....but not sarcasm from cruscott. Because hes said just that. As fact.

Im not blindly scared of nuclear power.....that would be one extreme. There is also the other extreme that think its 100% safe.

Im more concerned with the waste....and not so much worried that a nuclear plant will blow up and wipe out half the country.

People like to offer criticisms without solutions.

Wind/solar is simply not realistic at this point. The cost/time/space it would take to harness enough solar energy to power even a town is astronomical. Sure people can help by installing their own panels and just being more environmentally aware but...

I'm not saying nuclear power is foolproof, but I would like to see one legitimate solution from the naysayers.

A legitimate solution is pretty complex.

Slowly phasing out "bad" and slowly phasing in "good" seems realistic. I'm sure if you really look at it it's much more complex than "good" and "bad". But people on this planet consume more every single day. As a active ecosystem we can't really expect to literally destroy the planet forever and be able to sustain life as we know it.

Nuclear is ok in 2011. But what will the world look like in 2111 if we don't make a conscious change? 10x as many plants producing 10x and much waste? A plant that will run for 100 year will produce waste that will last for 25,000+ years.

i was taking the train into the city last weekend with 3 18 year old navy kids with their pea coats behind me listening to eminem on their phone without headphones talking about getting laid.

This is the 3rd time this exact scenario has happened in the past week.

    Re: Nuclear Reactors

No nuclear power plant will ever have an accident that causes an end effect like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfEMnx-Nz-w

That would require the U-235 isotope to function, as well as another piece of U-235 to be fired at ridiculous speeds to an exact spot for such a reaction to take place. Nuclear power reactors use the U-238 isotope, which isnt capable of an uncontrolled chain reaction like what would be seen from U-235. It would be what Chernobyl was, a really big dirty bomb.

Not to play devil's advocate (I'm only saying this because I was re-reading up on Chernobyl today) but in terms of radioactive material released, didn't the accident release 400 x more than the Hiroshima bombing did?
