All this time and they didn’t change the formula, just cranked out another top notch Tool song. No complaints.

So I see the consensus online amongst Tool fans is that Lateralus is their best song. I looked at some past setlists and I noticed Lateralus was not on them. Is there a reason for that?

    Great song.

They don’t play a lot of shows so there’s not a ton of setlists... but Lateralus has had its fair share of plays. Closed out the 1 and only show I attended

Yeah. Honestly...it’s just because it’s Tool.

I think that's because of the Fibonacci sequence thing

Yet another frontman with horrible taste in his own music?

I've never been a big tool fan, nothing against them they just dont do much for me.

Copying my post from the Tool thread:

Word, I think it's a great album. Listened through 4 times yesterday & I was surprised that Descending is my favorite. The live versions never clicked for me. I could listen to Adam's breakdown riff from Invincible on a loop forever haha. Danny shines on every damn song also.

They just re-established why they're my favorite band, I can't think of any other group who goes 13 years between albums & still nails it

So Exit 111 is this weekend and I got a real dilemma folks: ZZ Top or Mastodon?

I've seen ZZ twice but never Mastodon (been a fan since Blood & Thunder). Mastodon seems like the easy answer but I'm more concerned that ZZ may not have too many shows left in them.

Ended up seeing ZZ. The chances to see them are getting less and less each year so I didn't want to pass it up. I'm glad I did because they didn't even sound as they good two years ago when I saw them.

Hopefully I can catch Mastodon next time they come through town.

Prog metal fans... I'm a Mike Portnoy ballwasher so basically anything he does is good to me. But I really, REALLY dig this.

Oh hell yeah, abysmal at times. I've got two things going for me in that regard 1) I almost cant hear vocals/singing live (a bit of an innate quality, and also practiced by years of trying to not hear the singers I was playing with) so unless something really special is happening, Im probably just hearing the album vocals playing in my head and 2) Mastdons vocals are not important to me at all. They could mute the mics and I probably wouldnt notice.

    Insanely powerful live band.

This is pretty interesting... I think I tend to do this to a degree also. But sometimes it's so bad that it's hard to tune out. The last time I saw Dream Theater... woof - James had a bad night and it was hard not to notice. He was also cranked the fuck up for whatever reason.

Yeah worked well when I was a performing bass player, didnt need those singers anyway, but shitty in my personal life because it gets really hard to have a conversation in a restaurant while music is playing. Unless the vocals are really up in the mix and crystal clear I almost never hear lyrics correctly (I have some incredibly funny misheard lyrics throughout the years, my wife gets a kick out of it). Bands like The Mars Volta or Radiohead I tend to enjoy more because the voice is being used more as a supplemental instrument in the music vs telling me a story I need to pay attention to.

I thought the Black Crowes reunion screamed we're only doing it for the money but the Crue tour might as well be called the We're Only In It For the Money Tour.

We're probably at that point where so many of these farewell tours have done well and lined artists pockets that a lot of artists are trying to get on the bandwagon. Probably going to see a lot more "extended farewell" tours.
