the south and the dairy belt are exponentially fatter than places like Boston & Pittsburgh

but the whole country is fat so it's not much of an accomplishment

The first part of that equation eliminates the possibility of a bandwagon. If you root for the team closest to you, you're just a good fan regardless of how good or bad they may be. White kid born in Foxburo is bandwagon because the Pats are good and Brady and Gronk are white?

what are you talking about? there are bandwagon fans ALL OVER hometowns

bandwagon fans are what filled PNC Park in 2013 during the Pirates magical run
bandwagon fans are what filled Century Link for the Seahawks
bandwagon fans are who started showing up in september to watch the Royals

LOL people thinking bandwagon fans don't exist within the city of the team they root for

    this is great

    Re: 2014/2015 NFL Season

From an article that ran after the Bengals got lambasted by the pats on Sunday night football.

What's wrong with bandwagon fans? And aren't we all bandwagon fans to a certain degree? Bandwagon fans are important because without them, there'd be less incentive for a lot of teams (not all) to try to win. One of the biggest observations people have made about the Cubs through the years is that because their fan base remains so loyal and because Wrigley Field remains such a destination for so many people, there's no real reason for the Cubs to really do what it takes to win. This same thing has been said about the Bengals before (the loyal fan base part), and I've wondered it about UD basketball as well.

Teams need pools of fans whose temperature rises and drops with their outcomes. It's no coincidence that the Bengals started to "get it" when people began turning their backs to them. One of my biggest fears with the Reds is that with the All Star Game coming in 2015, the ticket base will be so strong that there's no need to win back disaffected fans. Pro sports teams need the carrot of potential customers and supporters dangled in front of them.

umm what? that has nothing to do with the growth and popularity of the sports. bandwagon fans are fans that only buy tickets, buy merchandise, and watch teams on TV when they are successful or only thereafter.

TV ratings, attendance, merch sales, and nowadays, social media trends, are what help sports grow and become popular

therefore, bandwagon fans are very important to all sports

    not sure why this hard

they would obviously say the Pirates, but that doesn't mean they're not lying to you. a bandwagon fan is someone who really doesn't give a shit about a team when they suck, and no one is going to admit that to anyone because we like to act like know-it-alls.

TV ratings are the only thing that dramatically effect the bottom line, and if what you were saying was remotely true, bandwagon fans have a big affect on the NFL, ratings would be shit (not worse, but shit) when bad teams play.

TV ratings do fall off when bad teams play

the NFL is just more popular, and more bet upon, than other American sports

but if you think a jacksonville-tennessee game draws as many eyeballs as a steelers-cowboys game, you're dumb

Someone who decides to not waste 100 bucks to go to a game when the team sucks isn't less of a fan, they're a smarter fan.

I don't live in Detroit anymore, and only go to Tiger playoff games. Bandwagon as hell I guess.

tickets don't cost $100 when the team sucks

bandwagoners don't watch when the team sucks

bandwagoners don't buy jerseys and hats when the team sucks

it's not a matter of not going to a game. it's simply a matter of not caring. do you seriously not know anyone who doesn't care about a city's team until said team is in the playoffs?

EDIT: or even making a run for the playoffs?

but if you think a jacksonville-tennessee game draws as many eyeballs as a steelers-cowboys game, you're dumb
Did you read what I wrote?

I said if bandwagon fans were as important as you're implying, ratings would be shit, not just worse. But they aren't shit. The NFL is the most popular show regardless of who's playing, because bandwagon fans don't move the meter.

Is the cost of the ticket the only cost incurred when going to the game? Do you float there on your solar powered hover board and fold it up in your pocket so you don't have to pay parking? That's cool, most people don't do that.

Also, stop taking about merchandise as if the NFL makes any real money from it compared to other revenue sources.
