Yeah, I doubt they were surprised. You don't just show up with all your amps and equipment and knock on the venue door.

Friends of mine that mock the current day sans Boyd DMB lineup dont realize it's this or nothing. Dave was ready to breakup the band in 96, 06 and now I am reading 16 as well and imo had Boyd not left, and Buddy joined, we wouldn't have "DMB" imo anymore.
Buddy, coupled with Rashawn and Jeff already being hired guns, and probably realizing he can technically go solo, or he can just keep Carter/Stefan , call it DMB , and continue the machine... while feeling as a "new band"... Was a perfect scenario for the spark DMB needed..
Dave was ready to breakup the band in 96? Can someone tell me more? I knew about 06 and 16, never heard about 96 though.

Seems he has a rocky relationship every ten years on the 6s. I bet they'll break up in '26.

during the Crash sessions, dave was giving his 110% effort/output, and the other members supposedly had complaints, leading to him and steve lillywhite having a conversation about Dave thinking of just leaving them and doing it solo with hired guns. Steve convinced Dave that a "band" is a "brand" and the rest is history

Re: Boyd sitting in with DMTB?

Someone already mentioned this, but it was confirmed in 2016 by members of this board with inside connections that it would be Boyd's last tour, and that the 2017 hiatus was related to that. It was announced on the day of the Super Bowl show, which coincided around the same time of the allegations coming out.

It was also on these boards that someone local ran into Butch and asked him how the sit-in came about, and he said he called Dave when he heard about the benefit and said to let him know if he could help in anyway, and Dave was like, "do you mean play?" and it went from there.

I will say it was a triumph of the band to get Stevie Wonder as a guest in '17 with Boyd and Butch for a show.

Lol this made me laugh. I am still hoping to be at a show where Tripping Billies is played and Dave goes, “check ‘em out Boyyyyddddd!” And BT comes out jamming from back stage.

maybe this is the first step in a very long meta project whereby first boyd joins, then stefan is dismissed from DMB and joins DMTB, then carter "retires" from DMB and joins the tribute band, then finally dave quits DMB but joins DMTB, and then it comes out that this was the best way they could think of to get rid of rashawn, jeff, and tim without hurting their feelings.

Per a recent interview with Lillywhite Dave approached Lillywhite during the crash sessions and expressed thoughts of going solo. Steve Lillywhite talked Dave into staying with the band and he stayed.

Also in the same podcast series Carter got upset during the busted stuff sessions per Steve Harris (sound engineer for tLWS and Busted Stuff and Some Devil amounst other projects) Cater stayed in the town of the sessions but was seperated for a few days from the band but eventually the band met in the studio and all was good again.

Re: Boyd sitting in with DMTB?

After listening to the Busted Stuff podcast from Matt Norlander today, I don't know if simply replacing Boyd would have had the effect some people think it would. Steve Harris pretty much said that himself. Musically Boyd wasn't necessarily on the same level as the rest of the band but he brought this fire and intensity in his prime that was passionate and hard to recreate. I think you end up with a Jeff situation where a portion of the fanbase has nothing good to say because it's cold and sterile compared to the original.

    BUT

that all being said, I dont buy the "boyd was out" before the allegations came to. maybe the band knew in advance / earlier than we did. but that was imo the final straw and in a way, it likely fell into their lap at a time they were looking to get rid of him
i just feel like most of the fans believe this is the case, and while we may be wrong, i would think someone would've cleared that up by now, maybe even Boyd himself.
The timing was very suspect but it was very cut and dry of Boyd playing shows until the news, and not playing thereafter...
What happened in 1996? And do we know Dave was ready to call it quits for the band in 2016 or just assuming?

what type of complaints could those freeloaders possibly have had with the songs/music Dave was writing in that era!? All due respect to Carter and Roi, Daves songs/frontman personality ARE the band back then...haha half kidding, half serious...

Re: Boyd sitting in with DMTB?

almost the entire setlist of N3 at the gorge is crafted as a story of a lost man and his demise...along with staples he jams on. Dave carefully crafted that setlist. Very impressive actually haha. Starts it off with Stone(creeping suspicion, things are not as they seem...),Burning Down The House(clever dave), #41(another song almost could be written about BTs downfall), Say Goodbye(obviously just the title), So Damn Lucky(rest of band making it out), Minarets(all our wars, over you we are fighting...),Where Are You Going, ...then a 5 song run of Rhyme & Reason, a song specifically about hard drugs, followed by LIOG for him to shine one last time...Then You Might Die Trying, The Maker, Typical, Last Stop, all songs with clear end of life over/undertones...then Ants of course, Pig(clear message of what should have been) and ending with Stay...Dave wishing it were different. Turns out Boyd being a trainwreck makes for a good ass setlist though! Wow lol

Where is the band today? Lots of past drama, Are they happy now? Are they just trying to make its through another summer? You wonder what plan B is for Dave. Carter was what 5 years ? Just wondering how they are all getting along now?

We presumably know what dave was without Carter and Roi:
    https://www.amazon.com/Imagine-We-We.../dp/B00093GH4G

Not bad. But nothing - even close - compared to DMB.

I don't think anyone helped Dave write cornbread - but Stefan did help write the Dreaming Tree...

lately it seems to me there was never a time the love and light the fans and band preach during the live gigs was ever real behind the scenes

we know of almost breakups in 96, 02, 06, 16
we know of official statements of unhappiness in 01 ,05, 07
    Unofficial hiatus in 17

however, it seems Once Roi passed and then again once Boyd left, there may have been moments of early DMB brotherhood again (09) and again (Buddy -> Present) but thats not really "DMB" for this argument, more a signal of the above statements playing out and a breakup taking place seemingly unnoticed.

I recall an interview with Dave before last year's tour, I can't recall who it was with, where he kind of said he still wasn't happy. I don't remember his exact words, but it was something like in his mind people don't come to the shows for the music, but just to party. He also was saying he felt like he had to keep going because of all of the people the band employs and all of the charities that depend on them for donations.

Maybe someone else remembers this or has a link to the interview. It was actually kind of depressing.

Turns out Boyd being a trainwreck makes for a good ass setlist though! Wow lol
I forgot how great of a set LT44 was, and I was in the pit for it!

Boyd didn't actually show up? Now that's funny.

I’ve always felt they would have a hard time disconnecting from the band because it is this revenue machine that so many families depend on. Maybe we get Caravan type tours in the future? I didn’t attend any but I would think it would be less if the causal fan and more of the dedicated fans that are there for the music? Just my take.
