Ants Podcast 84: DMB Live 25 (28?) - Episode Discussion

You know, we were really enjoying this year off*. Jake's making Chik-Fil-A sauce, Joe's hitting up every no-show and then some, and Matt's switched from beer to coffee. But what's that you say? A new album has dropped? No - not *that* album. DMB Live 25 took most of us by surprise (well, not Jake), and it's set the community on fire. Jake offers some insight into how this project came to be, and what went into bringing it to fruition. The 'cast is back, Ants!

Hey now, don't poo poo the studio albums being reissued on vinyl as a walk in the park! Management could easily have just sent the CD off and advertised "first time on vinyl", but they took the time with Crash to source the original analog stereo master, they carefully selected someone who can cut from analogue tape in an all analogue chain and they ensured everything was right (you can see from the stamper # that sides were cut more than once) before finalizing pressing.

That's pretty huge when you consider the vast majority of major label releases don't do anything of the sort and just use buzzwords like 180g or "audiophile edition", terms which mean absolutely nothing.

    Amen to all of this!

The last thing we want is to go back to the type of vinyl releases like AFTW. Crash should be the model for the rest of the catalog

Another vote in the Amen category. DMB is doing very right by their vinyl releases these days, here's hoping that BTCS follows the Crash model exactly.

Or, if they were so inclined...an all analog 45rpm 4xLP set

This would be what I'm most interested in knowing as well. It seems like they're bound to eventually.

Anyone who has listened to my opinions on DMB in the studio and DMB vinyl knows that it's borderline inappropriate love. No poo-poo'ing from my on DMB studio vinyl releases, I assure you!

I opened iTunes, refreshed the podcast and E84 showed up. So the feed XML is sound - just must need a refresh on y'all's end.

I use Overcast for my podcast app and it was in there instantly.

I don't think that's a "yikes" - it's a pretty common attitude, actually, when it comes to anything deemed a collector's item. You want maximum value; maximum rarity. Especially with the knowledge that it *will* get out there "digitally" anyway, and I think it's a fine point of view for Joe to hold.

If you go to a show and hear Spotlight, do you want the next 30 shows to feature it as well? Or do you (secretly) hope they never play it again, so you can say "I was there when..."

Not sure how something happening at a live show equates to a piece of physical media being released.

Why would you not want everyone to be able to hear the best quality here?

And to act like it would have a true noticeable impact on secondary prices is silly, especially when the thing still hasn't sold out.

Not wanting anyone else to have access to the music is pretty shitty. I can understand not wanting them to release more vinyl. That makes the vinyl worth a little less down the road. But it doesn't look like that's a problem since they are still available.

I think its an absolute joke that this possibly isn't getting released in other formats. All the money the majority of people have spent to support this band through the years, and this is how we are thanked?

Someone will make the arguments that there is a ton of content out there already that we can download if we want, but truthfully its all become the same to me... I stopped buying live trax, and dmblive because nothing separates them for me anymore. It's all starting to sound too similar. Same songs selections, perhaps great performances, but not distinguishable enough to keep me interested in spending money. I don't need more ants, two steps, or crashes in my collection, with the occasional "greatest performance ever" of if i had it all sprinkled in. I need the break for its, falling off the roofs, etc... to keep the collection fresh and exciting.

This would/will be a nice way to rejuvenate my interest because it was different, and they blew/are blowing it for me personally by making the decision to have this vinyl only.

My take, don't really care how others feel about my opinions. It is what it is. Happy for those who have the ability, and the means, to afford and hear these.

IMO, when people are looking at the cost of this set @ $175, they are discounting the value of the book. If you attended the pop-up gallery and saw the photos, you know how amazing this book is going to be to have. I wouldn't be surprised if the book alone went for $100 on the open market as a collector's item of the band's history. I would pay it.

With that in mind, a 5 LP set of 26 of their greatest live songs with some extreme rarities and best performances for roughly $100 in a collectors box to celebrate their 25th anniversary, I'd consider that a good deal.

I absolutely think it should come with a digital download for on-the-go listening, but that is a different story. I also have no problem with Joe's opinion that offering a CD/digital only option would devalue this collection. From the moment it was released it was advertised as limited release, 2500 units only, no mention of any other media available. If they offer a CD/download after the fact, it is not only unfair to those who only bought it because they felt it was their only chance to get the music... but is unfair to the collectors making in an investment.

The book isnt worth $100... if youre pushing it MAYBE its worth $50, still puts the price of the vinyl alone well over $100 for 25 songs.

Do not understand how saying its unfair to collectors or people who bought it. If you bought it, you should be buying to because its on vinyl and thats a medium you enjoy and like to listen to. If they end up releasing the digital, its a completely different thing, and wouldnt include any of the extra box set stuff, so in no way is it unfair to 'collectors' who bought it to sit on the shelf. Sorry, but im not gonna feel bad for them whatsoever.

Releasing a set of rare/never before heard songs an celebration of the bands 25th anniversary shouldnt be something limited to just 10% of the small sect of hardcore fans.

Ive got no problem with them releasing a vinyl like this, and am glad they did for the people who wanted it, but the music should be available in other forms to the other 90% of the hardcore base that wants to hear it.

Making the argument that it will undermine the value of this is just nonsense, especially when you look at the rest of the vinyl industry and 98% of releases come with a digital download.

the thing, joe is absolutely wrong in his opinion that releasing other formats of the music would limit the value of the vinyl (joe is a really good guy so I don't mean any personal disrespect when I say this)

the value/future resale price of the vinyl sets has precisely zero-point-zero to do with the music that's on the vinyl. it only has to do with the fact that it says Dave Matthews Band on it and there are only 2500 of them.

see: every pearl jam vinyl release. all are released in every format you could think of; all have high resale prices because the vinyl itself is limited.

    100%

It also has to do with how big the vinyl bubble has swollen to over the past few years.

I am glad the price point seems to be keeping flippers away. I'm glad those who really want it have had ample time to get it. There should be no complaining if/when it sells out and your only option is ebay or discogs and above face
