I can't help but appreciate that, while genuinely enjoying the sound of him doing so within the context of an almost 30-year-old band that is still evolving.

If you or others think it is 'shitty' art then, like you said, to each their own.

**This is also doesn't mean I'm over here listening to the song on repeat, or think it is some great artistic statement. But their is beauty on this album that is being overlooked. It almost seems like some people are in a rush to form an opinion about the new material. And why these broad, blanket generalizations like 'shitty'? So a song is either 'shitty' or 'not-shitty'? Up to par or not?
good stuff.

sometimes an artist just hits everything they were going for that even if it's not perfect, in the classic sense, you leave it because it's real and raw. it's art. 30 vocal takes later you may lose what inspired you about it.

who would visit Pisa if it were fully erect?

smooth Italian, leaning against his sports car, eyeing up your wife:

"tower? what tower? why are you taping me?!"

for the record, the section in Cant Stop with "so hungry" is the worst dmb thing ever created. i cringe every time. every time.

There will always be dedicated fans who try to find a deep meaning in Kayne West poop song, or Yoko Ono’s episode, or the vocals in this DMb song.

Just like there will always be people who find a bucket of paint thrown against a wall as something amazing that ‘you just don’t understand’.

Not trying to insult you, but you’re not gonna convince me Dave is even trying here. It took them six years to make this album and everyone got tired of waiting so Dave recorded this ‘solo’ song half drunk just to get the album finished.
Seriously comparing TGIY to Kanye's Poop song and Yoko Ono? A bucket of paint thrown against the wall?

And you were worried about insulting me? Not embarrassing yourself?

If the appeal of the song is lost on you that is no sweat off my back. If finding elements in it I can enjoy reflects poorly upon me, in your eyes, that also doesn't bother me. Maybe you find some sort of psychological comfort in believing you simply 'know better' or have higher standards than us deluded 'artsy' types. Maybe you've been brainwashed by a message board into believing incessant criticism and pessimism are to be admired and are, in fact, the markings of a 'true' fan. Maybe you and I simply differ as to what makes pleasing sound.

But you are right about one thing. There is tons and tons and tons of art that is recognized as brilliant/beautiful/whatever by some while many others "just don't understand".

yea CS is one I can't really get behind. But in the last version I heard (the uptempo version) the 'so hungry' part was the one section I actually sort of liked.

I think the band knows the song is missing something, and that is why they reworked it. It is an improvement but a Tyler Durden quote comes to mind: "You're polishing brass on the Titanic; it's all going down". If an ugly person gets botox or a facelift, sure they may have less wrinkles, but they are still ugly.

I am no DMB apologist. Just try to listen objectively is all.

Wait, didn't you just make this post yesterday?

'I don't say too much around here, but there seems to be too many kneejerk reactions that then turn into bandwagon opinions.

(not among the musicians, though ;-)'

That's quite an assumption, isn't it? Discrediting someones opinion because you've assumed they are not a musician?

For the record, I've been playing music my entire life and I personally believe That Girl is You is the worst song Dave has ever written. And I truly believe he would laugh if anyone called it art. Guys like Dave write songs like this in under an hour.

That's all I have energy for. Glad you enjoy it.

Definitely. That's the way I am with it, and I've found that I either liked (or eventually liked) the vast majority of their catalog, and could at least tolerate most of the remaining part of their catalog, outside of Be Yourself... I still can't find any redeeming quality to that song.

I can't believe I'm making this confession, but the Lakeview performance of That Girl is You has me liking this song. I think because of the build up with Carter... it actually is pretty good! The studio version is still god awful for me, but I'm sure it'll grow on me.

I never thought I would cave on this one.. wow

I love this band so much and am addicted to this site and discussion about all things DMB, but am increasingly finding the highly critical viewpoints to bum me the hell out. I thought the song had a fun catchy riff, and as a singer who can't sing, prefer the flawed passionate vocal vibe (aka Bob Dylan) to the polished perfect vocals of many singers. I felt Dave's passion in the song and also appreciate the fact that it wasn't bogged down with too much extra stuff (horns, solos) just for the sake of including them...to me this means it has more potentially to be jammed out in different ways.

Song has definitely grown on me. I never hated it, thought it was interesting but also a little ridiculous (still do, but that's actually part of its charm), but I really kind of dig it now. Especially from 1:40 on.

At SPAC N1, this song was especially excellent.

Full disclosure, I've loved it since I first heard it. But the full band build really gives it more of everything. The extra added was the band getting the audience to clap as another layer of the rhythm builds in the tune. Not only did it make sense, add perfectly to the tune, but all the folks around us loved it.

You have to ignore 'em. Back in the late 90's/early 00's most everyone on this site's boards was young and excited and full of neo-hippy verve. It was all about the love, baby.

Then DMB had some rough years, some not-so-great albums, etc.

Now the boards are full of bitter, jaded old troll-men who forgot how to have fun, and believe Dave should be writing music to serve their grimdark aesthetic and general weariness with life.

You don't gotta surrender to that. None of us do. Love it up, dance, be joyful. There's a new DMB album this summer. It kicks ass.
