I just wanted to upgrade my license to a verified one so I can get on a plane, I showed them exactly what they demanded on their website plus some. This is what I showed:

Existing drivers license
Federal ID
Pistol permit
Birth Certificate
Social Security card
Medical Card with photo ID
A piece of mail
My badge

Somehow these idiots declined me for a verified ID because I only had one piece of mail, despite the rather sailet fact that their website does not state you need 2 pieces of mail, only 4 documents that are not expired (DL, SS, Birth Certificate, any photo ID or a piece of mail) - WTF is wrong wrong with this state. Bunch of fucking morons who don't know the god damned law. First time I have blown up on someone (and the little twat's manager) doing their job in ages - the managers response (I was calm and collected) was 'Sorry, you need a second piece of mail but if you want I can throw away your line ticket' - I asked him if he had any idea where he could shove it. Jesus christ you just cannot fix stupid and uneducated!

Jaime is right in the fact that what you have to do to get a Real ID is regressive. You're essentially being asked to prove things you already proved to the state.

Edit: It also seems to serve no other purpose than to generate revenue.

Yes, it is solely for revenue. We are proving and paying for things we have already proven time and again.

Irony is when I got my concealed carry permit all I needed was a valid license and a birth certificate. Pretty sure my carrying a weapon is a tad more dangerous to others than getting on a plane.

I guess I was lucky that my renewal date fell in the time period between when they started certifying licenses for this and the deadline, so they didn't get any extra money out of me. Nor, as I mentioned, did I have to prove anything extra. I just renewed my license like normal.

Proof means: an original birth certificate and other primary documents, original Social Security card and original papers showing lawful status in the U.S. A U.S. passport alone also has this built-in identity protection, though, residents would need to routinely carry it.

Pretty sure what I brought was all that is required and more.

There is SO much room for improvement in regards to the DMV. I'd love to see state's develop apps that could greatly reduce a lot of this red tape non-sense. Specifically in my case, tell me that It'd be better to get those extra documents together to transition to the Real ID as opposed to having to make an additional trip.

They could make available a dashboard of your DL info, driving record, etc... all right on your phone. I know insurance companies are moving that way, which is nice. If I have my phone, I have my vehicle insurance proof available as opposed to the paper in the glove box, which could be expired if I'm not paying attention.

Applicants must bring the following:

1. A completed DL-43 application (this form is also available at the driver license office)

When you say CT, are you referring to the state? I pulled up the requirements for a ‘Real ID’, assuming that’s what you mean when you say upgraded licensed, and according to ct.gov - you need two different pieces of mail from two difference sources.
