New DM(B) Article on JamBase, Links to Additional Interviews

https://www.jambase.com/article/dave...dead-interview

I just ran across this cool JamBase article/summary of an interview with Telerama, which is linked in the article, and here:
https://www.telerama.fr/musique/dave...n,n6154552.php

There's also a SoundCloud audio clip on covering Eyes of the World, and the story of "how it went down."
I haven't listened yet...figured I'd share first.

Use chrome. I know for me, it automatically pops up a ‘translate’ button

Love that memory of the wind/dust coincidence. That comment about The Stone from Bowie is really cool.

You know... it's always kind of mystified me as to why it gets played as much as it does. Maybe we owe it to Bowie for complimenting the song and thus keeping it around!

    Mystifies you?

Out of everyone that considers themselves big fans of this band, its easily in the top 3 of the vast majority.

With that said I could definitely see Bowie telling Dave that is something that keeps the song around somewhat more. But its not like it gets a ton of plays as is.

Exactly. It's a great, complex song that was never a 'hit'. Those songs, generally, get played to a lesser extent. Like Dreaming Tree.

I would have to say if The Stone was given airplay as much as say Crash, Crush or even in the Video era it would have been more of a monster than it is now.

In my opinion, The Stone is one of this band's masterpieces. But there is no way a casual audience would prefer it to any of the band's radio hits.

The chorus is catchy, but the verses and tone are a little too dark. It's also too long for radio, and I don't think a radio edit would do it any justice.

Well, I'll be looking out for a Dead cover over the next couple of nights.

Long shot, sure. But this kind of seems out of nowhere to say if the Dead hadn't been on his mind recently.

This. But it's really a fear that it wouldn't resonate with the casual audience.

I wish bands would have been unafraid to release longer, more complex songs back in the day. Maybe it would have changed what was 'mainstraim'.

I dont believe this is a new interview. Just reposted some old quotes.

Theyve done 2 dead covers ever, last one was for the 50th anniversary shows cause it was the same night they played SPAC.

Theres next to no chance they do another unless Bob Weir kicks the bucket soon.

Ah gotcha, thought this was a fresh interview.

Also, I doubt that SPAC FOTD happens without Bela saying something about GD50. So, you're right..probably not happening

I thought it was funny that the writer mentioned the band is relatively unknown in France...giving credence to when i said no one in their mid to late 20s knew who DMB was in Germany when I visited a few years ago.

I thought the same thing about Boyd...sure the guy was capable of a scree every now and then, but when he was on....he was an absolutely critical part of this band...no one can or ever should deny that.

I'm always surprised more groups didn't do this. I think the success of November Rain as a single shows that the pubic was willing to embrace a non-traditional song length/structure. The programmers chronically underestimate what the "average" listener is interested in.

Examples of that going back to 'Hey Jude.' George Martin told McCartney that radio would never play a song that long and he responded "They will if it's us."

Stairway to Heaven...Free Bird...Bohemian Rhapsody, and of course November Rain as you mentioned.

Yeah, there's those rare exceptions as you've mentioned. They are too rare. I remember Metallica's 'One' being a huuuuuge hit way back when. Long (even the 'edit' was still kinda long for radio), complex, totally different than your standard radio song. What did they do after that? Make a bunch of radio friendly songs/albums.

Layla is another longer complex classic. The proof is there, but when you can get two or three songs in that same amount of time... The RIAA and their servants were about moving physical merch. Artistic growth and feeding it to the public and future artists is t part of the game.

Yeah but Stairway wasnt released as a single (LZ didn't play the radio game much) it only backdoored its way onto radio later, I think its peak chart position was in the mid-80's.

Dylan- Like a Rolling Stone is another good one, but again maybe single digit songs as singles on the radio over 5 mins in the past 40 years? Not nearly enough.
