90’s/2000’s on CNN

Anyone watched the “nineties” and “2000’s” on CNN? Got sucked into back-to-back musc episodes tonight and was surprised to not see DMB mentioned in either episode. Blowing past the top grossing touring act of both decades in favor of Interpol and Smash Mouth seems strange. Anyone else notice this? I call Fake news?

Was in high school from '96-'00. DMB was absolutely irrelevant. There were like six of us in the whole school who loved DMB, and it was not an endearing characteristic.

Literally everyone in the school knew the Smash Mouth hits. Think anyone knew Crush? Nope. Maaaaybe Too Much.

Fair enough, but to not include them in this show in particular felt strange. The show is about music that defined the two decades, probably featuring 100+ bands and not even a clip of DMB. All I’m saying is it seemed like an omission.

I hear ya. DMB is just a weird animal. Immensely popular, but at the same time, not, lol.

And it's hard for us to be objective. They obviously defined that time period for us.

Interesting, my bother was in HS in the late 90s and early 2000s. DMB was huge. He and he friends were hardcore fans. Most people were posers tho. He said often people would make up bullshit about dmb just to sound cool or whatever. People would come up and say that they saw certian rare songs at shows and they were just full of bullshit. Just stuff like that constantly because they were the “thing”

I went to the same school and it was much different. some dmb fans for sure at school, but the posers were into the bro country shit and the rap.

Was going to watch this and never did since the previews never mentioned the band. Went from '00-'04 and this is exactly how it was here as well. Had some friends in my car once while I had Luther College in the CD player. They honestly all looked at each other, said "what the fuck is this!?", and laughed. I took it in stride but no one ever seemed to be on the same page with me concerning this band.

Strange, was this part of a montage? I never saw it, but if I did this thread may have never existed...

I grew up in the suburbs of Albany, NY; my HS graduating class was ~450. I can't recall knowing anybody who knew DMB. I certainly "hid" it.

I definitely didn’t hide it. I would get teased here and there but by end of high school (2003) those same people were like yo nick! Let me know what time you’re hitting the lots!

Interesting. I graduated in 1999 from the Denver area with a class about 1000. Dmb was huge. I’m sure Smashmouth was too with other kids. There was definitely a significant amount of people who went to Red Rocks every year. I heard about Luther College just walking the halls.

The first concert I ever went to without a parent, just friends, was Smash Mouth at the Hard Rock Cafe in San Antonio when I was 16.

yes, towards the very end of the episode they sort of have an “other 90s bands that were also popular” montage and DMB is in there. A very short clip from I believe it was the Listener Supported show is played (but I could be wrong).

Yeah I saw it, just a quick shot in the montage of post grunge Era music. I thought thry missed an opportunity to highlight the contrast between the DMB style of music and Seattle grunge rock.

I also graduated in '99 (in Michigan) and they were huge. That fall just about every freshman girl had that b&w poster of Dave in their dorm room. I remember they did poster sales on campus and there were so many DMB posters.

They also played in MI regularly (at least once/year), whereas he probably didn't tour at all in some states.

Nope, not correct. I’ve watched every episode of that series CNN does and DMB did get mentioned not by name but by live concert footage during the ending credits of the 90s music episode.

I graduated in 2004 in NH. There wasn't a lot of LoVE for DMB at my school. From what i can remember bands like Guster, OAR and Dispatch were more popular
