Re: Uber (becoming a driver)

only thing I can think of is, were you ready to get in the car when the driver got there, and did you tell them the right place to pick you up? having to drive around to find you or wait until you're done doing whatever, could lead to a 4

Definitely no driving around to find me...maaaaybe a guy had to wait 2 mins for me to come down/go outside, but fuck off if they penalize for that.

Lol that doesn’t really sound like an Uber problem, just a pissy driver. Sure they drive for Lyft too.

But it's happened basically every month since they started those month in review emails. One month was 9 rides, but usually it's like 4-5. And I'm getting 4.5-4.6.

I mean...it is pissy drivers, but thats what Uber is, so it's still an Uber problems too. But yea, I'm sure they drive for Lyft too.

I really don't care too much about the score, more that I give dudes 20% tip and 5 Stars and I get that shit. I just want to be able to go back and change my rating for them to fuck them over

I’ve read a lot saying that it doesn’t make economical sense to drive for Uber with car maintenance after driving so many miles etc

Can't see tip prior to rating.

I don't mind waiting a couple minutes if I'm like in the driveway of your house (actually, I do, but I won't get TOO pissy). If it's a busy street with no parking, I'm definitely dinging stars if I have to wait for you to come out of your building/the bar/wherever. Not that that does anything. No one gives a shit about passenger ratings.

It makes no sense at the UberX base rate. You have to hit the surge pricing.

Love that Portlandia epsisode where the girl has a 3.1 rating and then gets in a car with Steve Buscemi in an attempt to boost her rating.

Took an Uber for the first time yesterday. Actually needed it twice. Seemed like a decent way to make some extra money but didn't realize until reading here that you only get to refuse a small percentage of rides. I always assumed that a ride would be requested and nearby drivers could choose whether or not to take it and first one to accept got it.

Drive for Uber and Lyft. I give basically everyone 5 stars. You have to be a real piece of shit and have a nasty attitude to get dinged with a 1 star. Probably only given out 15 or so 1 stars out of thousands of rides.

Been doing it as my side job for 2 years and its good money for the most part, but I’ve picked up a new 2nd job that I start in a few weeks. Only going to do Uber/Lyft sporadically when they are surges/big events, or to help me save for something I really want.

Does Uber report your earnings to the IRS or are you responsible for reporting it?

    Both.

They file a 1099 with the IRS reporting how much they paid you. You are responsible for reporting that income on your tax return so you can pay taxes on it.

In IL, if you don't report and the emplyer does, that will earn you an audit. I know from experience.

Thinking about giving it a try. I have free time at different times on different days and the flexibility of it is appealing. I don't want to commit to an actual second job right now.

Yea, it doesn't get much better than this in terms of flexibility.

I don't work late nights, so I don't have to deal with a lot of the shit the true weekend warriors do. Closest was when I picked up a couple from a clinic and the girl started feeling sick. Was able to pull over in time for her to get out and puke.

Fortunately she made it in time

While I can handle the smell of vomit, that doesn't make the experience any less annoying. I chatted up a driver while in Vegas and he told me the rider is responsible for the cost/cleanup but if that's your main vehicle, you're kind of shit out of luck.

Seems like the best way to avoid all that stuff. I really don't like that you don't see the destination until the passenger is already in the car. I would much rather stay in the suburbs as much as possible. Watched some videos with real horror stories and it has me thinking its not worth the potential trouble.

I did it as my full time job for over a year. I can count the bad rides on my fingers (out of probably over a thousand) and I have zero horror stories. Stick to the morning and happy hour crowds, maybe the late dinner crowd, and you’ll be fine. If you start chasing the surge pricing into the bar close hours, youll start getting the war stories.

I usually started my day at 4:30-5am and worked till lunch.

I’ve been driving, albeit sparingly the first 2 months, for about 3 months now, and I’ve basically stuck to a similar schedule that Matthew is talking about. I just have 0 desire to drive around incoherent or annoying drunks, and I don’t really want to be on the roads that late anyways.

    I’ve enjoyed it so far!

Thanks. It will definitely be a part time thing for me. If I can make a little extra cash without hating it, that's enough for me.

How is it for full time work? I recently lost my job and am staring down at unemployment. Thinking of making a career change, so not sure what's coming next and was thinking something like this could be better than going on unemployment. Is it decent cash flow?

I signed up and am ready to go but have not yet. Its a combination for not having a ton of free time lately and also being hesitant. There is still a part of me that isn't keen on picking up a stranger and having no idea where I am going until they get in the car.
