If I had to make a top song list of the decade, there is little question Fake Empire would be in my Top 10.

Boxer, from the second I heard it, has been one of my favorite albums of all time. Easily #2 of the decade.

Go with Alligator or Boxer. Alligator is probably your best bet. If you like what you hear from both, get Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers after you develop a taste for their style.

totally, sometimes I think alligator is stronger, more concise...

but they go hand in hand though, I love that the so called "karen" is the antagonist within most of the songs on both albums...

    Re: The National

    The National
    Title: TBC
    Label: Beggars Banquet
    Release Date: May 2010

The band «push things to epic places» on the follow-up to 2007 breakthrough Boxer.

«We've been working on a National record since last Winter and non stop since April when we haven't had shows to do. We built a recording studio in our garage. It's quite a shock because it all looks terrible from the outside but very modern on the inside. As a band we're constantly making things then destroying them and redoing them. Normally that's difficult to do in a studio you're paying for. But now we can do that ad nauseam without worrying about getting penalized. We've recorded 17 songs and we'll end up wittling them down from there. The new album is much more ambitious than anything we've ever done. We've never pushed things to an epic place before because it's never felt quite right. But there are a few songs on this record that do that: songs with bigger dynamic that lend themselves more to the way we play live.

There's more experimentation too. We're getting away from simple, organic sounds. Matt's also singing on this one, rather than murmuring. His range has improved, exploring ways in which his voice can work, but he's also found some melodies that are just amazing. He's really singing it out and going to places on this one. Boxer was more meditative but this one goes to different levels. It's definitely more dynamic. One of the new songs is called Crumhorn, which I took from a Bob Dylan lyric, but Matt will probably change the title at some point. There are also ones called Bloodbuzz, Vanderlyle and Runaway. We have some ideas for album titles, but haven't decided yet.

Matt Berninger kept it quieter on Boxer than he did on Alligator (i.e. no shout songs like "Mr. November"), but the band deepened their instrumentation, wrote some of their most subtly addictive songs, and had their biggest year to date (both in the National and in ambitious side projects like The Long Count). Curious what kind of mood they're in now? Matt tells us: "We started out trying to make a fun pop record. I had the word HAPPINESS taped to my wall. We veered off that course immediately. We've narrowed it down to about 15 songs now and it's going to be our best record (one song you can dance to) but it can't be described as happy." They've been recording for almost a year and as Aaron Dessner put it to us "[are] emerging from that black hole to start mixing in two weeks." Bryce adds, "There are a ton of songs and we have been working for a year, but as always with us it's the last couple months that change everything so it's too early to say what the overall direction [will be]."

Also, here are possible songs for the album. These have been played by The National on their 2009 tour. (___________) means that was the song's earlier or working title given by fans. I ranked them from best to good for now, other than Crumhorn because I have yet to hear a live of it.

    Vanderlylle, Cry Baby
    Runaway (Karamazov)
    Wake Up Your Saints
    England
    Brilliant Man
    Thousand Black Cities (Believe Me)
    Blood Buzz Ohio
    -----------------------
    Crumhorn

That sounds utterly fantastic. Can't wait. Two of my very favorite bands that I discovered right around the same time (Arcade Fire being the other one) releasing an album in the same year once again. Awesome.

Damn it. No Montreal date. I was lucky enough to see them this past summer though, and it was incredible. Out of the new songs that antsman posted, I think Karamazov is probably my favourite. For anyone who hasn't heard it, here's a great in-studio performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjskJAKeJdM
