Anybody have a motorcycle?

Any kind, sportbike or cruiser?

I just bought my brother's 2000 Suzuki Katana 600. Yea, bring on the insults about the slow and heavy Katana but it is by far the most comfortable sportbike you'll find. It's not meant to compete with the Gixxers, the R's (R6, R1) or the CBRs.

Definitely a good looking bike:

Great starter bike. I probably shouldn't have started on a 600cc, but my brother was selling it, so I got a good price on it.

    2004 Suzuki Intruder 1400.

If I can ever find an old Virago 920 again, I'll get it.
Best engine I've ridden, very underrated bike.

    I did in my post.

But just about everybody has an ol' pedal-powered bicycle, so I figured this would be better to attract the people who would be interested in this thread.

i'm interested in riding, but i'd have to store a bike for about 9 months of winter a year, and don't have garage to keep it in.

i see there's a couple of "starter" models for sale now, but i wonder how long it would take to outgrow a 250? would a 6'2" guy look totally ridiculous on a CBR 250?

Don't worry about how you "look" on a bike. It'll definitely have enough power for you. And if you end up selling it a year later, who cares. It's a GREAT bike to learn on.

Better to have a small bike for a year, then get something bigger, than get something big right away and destroy it.

Most people don't have the same bike for more than 2-3 years anyway, before they upgrade, at least when they're starting out. And if you wanna get a 500cc, that would be fine, too. But don't think you need to get a Gixxer 600, R6, or any big racing bike right away just because your friends think the smaller bikes are "stupid".

    That's my opinion.

yeah, true about the looks, i guess i meant more the fit than the appearance, but i agree with that. I've heard too many news stories about new riders on big bikes smearing themselves all over the road.

I'd definitely start in the small range, and if I get serious about it I'll do some research into what would be most appropriate.
Do you have riding experience? A family member of mine has a few years old ninja, i think 600cc or that range, for sale, but I think that's out of my reasonable starter league.

    Re: Anybody have a motorcycle?

To be honest, I didn't ride at all before getting this bike.

Look for a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course in your area. Here in Minnesota they even supply bikes and helmets. You don't need anything. It's a three day course, usually. First day of classroom, then two days on the bike. They totally teach you how to do anything. If you feel comfortable after that, maybe you'd feel fine with a 600cc.

The key is to not be stupid. Just because you're on a sportbike doesn't mean you have to go 90mph through traffic. When I first started, actually, I found it hard to even go the speed limit because everything felt a bit faster.

Don't forget about safety equipment. I've got a helmet, gloves, armored jacket and riding boots. None of this "shorts and t-shirt without helmet". Gotta be smart.

all good advice, thanks. I've done a quick search for training places around here (edmonton, ab) and would go that route for sure. A guy in my office rides, or used to, and has some stories that definitely show the need for something other than shorts and a t.

Did a search and this was the only real thread I could find about motorcycles. I've been thinking about taking the course and buying a bike, any pointers/advice? I'm kind of 50/50 on it. Think a motorcycle would be a lot of fun, but also nervous about it. Not really into crotch rockets or Harley-type bikes. I sort of like the cafe style racers. Would something like: http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gal...20900%2004.jpg that be too much for a first time rider?

If I were to buy a bike, I'd go with an Enduro. Yamaha makes some nice ones. Street legal and you can always take them off-road.

And all the girls will laugh at you for that. ride that in the woods, not in the street.

The yamaha v-star is a little bigger but is a nice starter bike IMO. If I can handle it, so can you.

Fleshlights are much safer to ride and you can do it in the privacy of you own home.
