throwing my hat in the ring, never saw this thread before and rather than backreading to find out: anyone a fan of the band Death? obviously they're no longer around but an absolutely amazing flash in the pan. too bad brain cancer cut their run short.

The only album I had by them back in the day was Leprosy. I liked it but did not get into death metal that much. I did not know the lead singer died.

Gene Holgan, ex-Death drummer, played for one of my fave bands, Strapping Young Lad. Devin Townsend is sick.

Reminds me of a song by the Mountain Goats:

    Slumped up against the sink
    Hair plastered to her cheeks
Marduk t-shirt sticking to her skin
Refugee from a disco in old East Berlin

    Weightless
    Formless
    Blameless
    Nameless

    Stray syllables were gurgling
From her throat one at a time
    Face hidden from my view
I let myself imagine she was you

    Only weightless
    Formless
    Blameless
    Nameless

And when I washed my hands
I ran the water hotter than I could stand
    Half rising to a crouch
Sinking back down to the floor
In your walking keep your head low
Try to leave no traces when you go

    Stay weightless
    Formless
    Blameless
    Nameless

I love seeing people who are the stereotypical metal-hating rap-lover play Maiden and the likes on Guitar Hero.

Me: Hey man, do you know what song that was?
    Them: Yeah... track 3.
    Me: ...

When are they going to release a best-of?

Loved that! The same guys have done another documentary called "Global Metal", it's fantastic. Check it out if you can, I saw in Toronto it back in June. Shows how metal has affected the world outside of the US/UK.

They released a five-disc best-of at the beginning of their career. It's called Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All & Metallica. You should get it.

Definitely agree on this album. I think Akerfeldt's clean vocals on "Burden" are probably the best and strongest-sounding of his entier career. Already got my tickets to see them when they come to Chicago in September. Can't wait!

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?

I am thrilled that people are actually talking about metal bands in this thread. Every time I turn on metal mania on VH1 classic, it’s nothing but a bunch of shitty hair bands that I will never consider to be truly metal. Sure, someone will make the case that the metal scene branched off down that road, but bands like Warrant, Poison, and Skid Row were and are a fucking insult to the word metal. I’m not knocking them, my life like Poison, but to me at the time and now, they are joke bands for little girls.

Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, and all of the cross-over bands were more my speed. And I did not like the hairspray music that is an abomination to the world of metal. I also love how the music world changed the true metal bands to “speed metal.” What? Those bands were closer to the essence of metal. “Where the Down Boys Go” and other tunes of that ilk is sissified metal and should have its own category and not the other way around.

And I don't mean to come off as an elitist with that rant. I just can fathom how those hair bands maintained the moniker 'metal' when they were just cheese.

And I'll give Motley Crue a pass, they at least played heavy.

Been crankin the Black Album all week. Such a great album.

Only 2 weeks 'til Ozzfest in Dallas and it's Metallica's only US tour date in 2008. Anyone else here going?

I thought about it because that is a really good lineup, but I just can't swing it right now.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?

I've picked up a few albums by bands Shadows Fall, All That Remains, Lamb of God... some of it is a little too intense for my taste though.

In the end I just enjoy the songs that have really crazy guitar licks. I wouldnt consider Buckethead "metal," but I'm going to see him in about 2 months for the second time. I can't listen to a lot of his albums because some of the stuff is just not that interesting, except for a few tracks here and there. But seeing him live, especially from less than 15 feet away, is absolutely mind boggling. He'll just lay down this really melodic tune for like 3 minutes, build up with some really heavy chords, add a few fills, and then all the sudden just rip of the most crazy 30 seconds of guitar playing.... or he'll go the opposite route and open with something ridiculous only to pull back.

For a while I got sick of all the middle school ball washing he got from his exposure in guitar hero, but then I saw him at a James Brown tribute concert and my mind was made, he is amazing.

I'll also occassionally throw on some Thrice, Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, etc.

Shadows Fall is another of the better modern metal bands. I really like War Within.

You know what I love best about this album? The keyboards finally WORK. On Ghost Reveries, Per just mimicked the guitar lines, and it just detracted. Now he finally has room to breath, and sounds like he's adding to the song instead of just being there.
