Big Whiskey vs. Shotgun

Now that we've had a chance to digest Big Whiskey...is Shotgun a better song than every song on Big Whiskey?

I'd definitely put it as the best song of the bunch.

Absolutely not. I'd rather listen to any song on Big Whiskey than Shotgun actually.

Dont know how you can pit one song against an entire album, but:

At any given show i would much rather hear shotgun than ANY big whiskey song.

My opinion was based on the fact that i have heard every song off big whiskey already, multiple times. Shotgun was a one time thing for me at my first DMB show. I want to see it again now that i appreciate this band more.

Absolutely. Shotgun is in my top 20-30 range. Nothing on Big Whiskey touches my top 70. Even without set lyrics, the music is some of the best in years. Plus, Dave sings this with emotion. The only thing with emotion on Big Whiskey, that's actually good, is Baby Blue, and Shotgun's music blows Baby Blue's music out of the stratosphere.

I'm not saying against the entire album, I guess I'm asking that if you were to rank the songs (the entire BW album + Shotgun), would Shotgun come out on top?

for me, its close. shotgun is an amazing tune, for sure, but i would take LITHOG, Why I Am, and Squirm. Maybe if they really brought it back and worked on the lyrics it would be a different story.

This is my problem with it. I'm all for emotion or whatever, but I want set lyrics when it comes down to it. Shotgun could've been an incredible tune if Dave sat down and finished the lyrics. I'll take LITHOG, Why I Am, Squirm, Seven, Spaceman and Baby Blue over Shotgun.

Squirm and Alligator Pie are both better than Shotgun. I'd say Shotgun is on the same level as LITHOG for me.

Dave came up with some really good lyrics in Shotgun, just on the fly. I like that they would change a lot....

Alligator Pie is awful. Just because it's set lyrics (and "tells a story") doesn't mean they are good.

Squirm is the only song I can see competing with Shotgun, IMO.

I don't understand how Shotgun is a mess lyrically. Yeah there are some versions that are not perfectly put together, but thats the beauty of it. I dont want it to be some kind of cookie cutter song like all of BW

Alligator Pie is far from awful. Just because Dave yells a bunch in a song doesn't make it good either. What is so good about Shotgun besides the riff? I like the song, don't get me wrong, but people here act like it's a masterpiece.
