I was very big into the Metro (AKA RBNY) from 2009-2012ish. I had season tickets and sat with the Empire Supporters club for a while. Getting Red Bull Arena definitely helped get me into it.
All of that said, here is what pushed me away from MLS:
1) Over expansion. The MLS expanded way to fast and without having a promotion/relegation system, it is simply too many teams at this point. Too hard to follow that many teams.
2) The playoff system. Every team basically makes the playoffs making it really random on who wins a lot of the time. The regular season is also largely pointless.
3) The Red Bull organization. They are all about making money and don't care about the fans or winning. Since you are new you probably don't remember the #RedBullOut #NoPetkeNoPeace slogan NY fans had for a while. He was our manager and was doing a great job, but had a disagreement with Red Bull and was fired. That pushed a lot of people away form supporting the team. I for one stuck to my guns and never went back to a Red Bulls game after that.
4) The Red Bulls never win. An original franchise with no titles to their name. I already root for enough teams that break my heart (especially NY based teams). I really didn't have it in me to suffer more with another team.
5) NYCFC. Absolutely BS that they were allowed to expand into NYC. I knew the Red Bulls would be pretty much irrelevant once that happened. MLS is not big enough for 2 teams yet. Again, over-expansion too quickly. I also hate Man City, so that didn't help.
6) It is simply still a shit product. I found it hard to care that much when I was so locked in on the Premier League, SPL and Bundesliga. MLS just isn't that good of a product.
7) I got older. Probably the biggest thing I have noticed with me and my friends is that we all followed footy a lot from like 15-30 years old. For some of us, it was easily our #1 sport or for me #2 behind hockey. I truly believe it is a young fans game though. My interest in it abated greatly with every year I got older. With that being the case, I just ran out of time to care about the MLS. I still follow the EPL and Man United, but even that I only watch a few games a year at this point.
8) I no longer live close to a team. Charlotte is the closest team to me at almost 3 hours away. I didn't even know the existed until like 4 weeks ago
. When I was in Atlanta I did go to a few Atlanta United games. Had a blast and full credit to their fans as they made the atmosphere great. It was just a fun event to go to though. I didn't follow it at all.
Anyway, those are my thoughts about the MLS. I would definitely come back and watch more if they implemented promotion/relegation, got rid of the playoff system and if Red Bull sold the team in NJ.
