Bike path. And one of the busier bike paths in the city so it gets cleared by the city pretty quick as it is used as a commuter path. It heads right downtown to campus and the capitol.

yeah same, I usually have to find a small stretch of street that’s safe to run on and just go back and forth the whole time

My Apple SE (1st gen) crapped out at 10.8 yesterday. Time for a new watch. I'm trying decide between series 8 and the ultra. I'm not a big guy...5'6" and 150lbs on a good day. Not a huge fan of how big the ultra is...but like the action button and added battery life. I'm sure the series 8 battery is way better than what I have...and I rarely "pause" my workout...and only do half marathons. I'm torn.

    Anyone have any advice?

Don’t care about sleep stats. I sleep like a baby.
I just want 1 watch for everyday wear + health/fitness tracking.

my longest run is only 5 miles typically and bike ride is 20 miles. Battery life is just fine, I charge it once a night and it’s never close to dying or anything. that’s while I’m streaming music from it the whole time while running too. For example it’s still at 67% rn and I ran 4 tonight.

I use a Garmin 645. I've had it for 3 years and haven't had any issues with it.

In other news....my training for my half was going great but probably 2 weeks ago I twisted my ankle something fierce. I thought it was ok but it apparently wasn't because about a week later I developed some general pain on the top of my foot. I've shut it down for the last week and I'm hoping I can run again soon. The half was supposed to be this weekend but I'm not going to risk it and the weather sucks for Saturday. I'll look for another half probably sometime in may.

    Blah.

    that sucks! Get well soon!

I've got my next half on May 7th. The pig again in Cincy. My training has been pretty weak. Too much work travel...just been a weekend warrior. April looking better so hoping to get in some mid-week short/medium runs and some speed work.

Thanks for the insight! When you run/bike, do you take your phone with you? or just the watch?

Realistically, unless you are doing something like scuba diving (Ultra has a depth sensor and water temp gauge that the 8 doesn't) or needing to go more than a day without charging it, the Ultra doesn't make much sense for double the price.

The action button is cool in theory, but it saves you maybe a few seconds vs manually activating whatever you'd program it to do (unless you are using it as essentially a rape whistle with the 89db alarm option).

I'd also say that the 8 doesn't offer much more than the Series 6 & 7s, so if you can find those instead for cheaper, might be worth it.

So here's my issue though...my SE crapped out at 10.8 miles using heart rate chest strap and bluetooth headphones. And I actually stopped the bluetooth headphones at about mile 9 because battery was <30%. My current SE has 83% capacity, and the batteries are roughly the same size between the SE/7/8. So if I get a 7/8, will I end up in the same spot a year or 2 from now where the watch can't make it through a long run?

I see all these posts on Strava about watches dying during a run and I'm like wtf. I can do a 15 miler on 20% battery and make it no prob. Never had my watch die.

If your primary use case for the watch is training, get a Garmin. There really is no competition, not really even close, when it comes to the richness of features and battery life.

I finally canceled my Strava premium membership after the hullabaloo of them basically being a shit company run by amateurs. I’m sure I won’t miss it, but before I was basically too lazy to go cancel it.

My primary use case is to me watch for both everyday and training. And I’m addicted to Apple Pay on my wrist.

I think then you’ll have to accept the trade offs to some extent, unless you get the Ultra. I’ve never had my Series 7 die on me, but I’m also not running more than 4 miles at a time and I don’t wear it when I go for bike rides since it’s redundant.

Have the Apple Watch SE (2nd gen). Works well as my everyday + tracking my miles and activity levels for workouts. Haven't had to even think about the battery yet, but it's only ~4 months old at this point.

Anyone know if the apple workout app will give you audible updates on time/pace/distance during a run? I know it didn't use to, which is why I started using NRC. But maybe it does now?

Speaking of Nike Run Club, I’ve been wanting to try it for the guided run functionality, but those are just all audio based, right? I was hoping for some kind of prompt feature like on the watch telling you to pick up the pace or something.

Got an 8. The Ultra was just ginormous on my wrist. Hard to get the sleeve of my quarter zip over it.

I have voice feedback enabled on the apple workout app on my watch. It's weird though... when I run without my phone, I'll get audible updates with split # and split time. When I have my phone on me, only get the watch buzz.
