It was a meh set for sure, but going in with low expectations, I really enjoyed the show. Highlights were Come On Come On and Squirm with the LA philharmonic (esp Squirm), seeing an album song debut (even if it's just WIW), Everyday, and a cool Why I am intro with a fake-ish Halloween intro feel. After OSW, Dave basically told everyone prepare for a very standard set when he said that he apologizes in advance if the band seems too into themselves for the last tour show. This immediately got me into a mode where I knew it'd be 6+ songs from Come Tomorrow and nothing too crazy.

When the guest horns came on, I was praying for anything but Jimi, but it is what it is!

Really cool intro to Why I Am and overall I think hollywood bowl is a cool unique place to see dmb. Many amphitheaters the band hits all have a same general feeling to them, like Chula and the old Irvine among other places outside of California. I really like the venue, as long as I drink enough beforehand to not have to wait in those crazy lines for drinks inside!

She actually stopped two other security personnel who overheard and were trying to help and actually radio in for information. She told them they could not call and check with anyone because she said so. She then had someone escort me out.

Gate 2:
Wait in line and then...

Denied. Why? Because security egomaniac from gate 1 called ahead on the radio to describe me and tell them not to let me in. They also refused to check with anyone.

Gate 3:
Wait in line and then...

Finally met two nice supervisors that called ahead to the band, verified in about 2 minutes that everything was allowed. They apologized for the wait and trouble and in I went. All in all about a 45 minute delay in getting in.

Inside, the only place I could setup was at the soundbooth. I was told if anyone complained that it was in their way it had to come down. The soundbooth had very limited space and I had to duct tape the shit out of the stand into the corner of the soundbooth box (which is made of wood and loves duct tape). The box also shared a wall with a box of attendees who showed up about 5 minutes before the show started and I'm sure were not sober. Had to fly a bit lower than normal at about 10 feet so it wouldn't be that much in the way of those in the boxes behind the soundbooth. During the show I went back to check a few times and the levels (left vs right channels) were no longer even, meaning someone turned the stand a bit and changed the direction the mics were pointing. Relatively minor effect on the sound, but it's there. Will try to fix it up on the computer before releasing likely tonight.

All in all, fun show, right?

I'll say this. We all really appreciate the work you put in on this one. It would be a shame if security prevented the fanbase from getting a hold of this show. Really sorry you had to endure that level of stress. Totally unfair. Just know all of us here are very appreciative. If I ever meet you at a show, beers on me all night.

Seriously, such a huge service to everyone and it's greatly appreciated! We all know just traveling to shows is a lot of work, planning, money, time etc, then to add on lugging gear, setting up and tearing down, THEN all the importing, logging, audio cleanup etc takes MORE time. I've asked almost every taper I see for a decade if they're Jon Koch just so I can personally thank him for the service and shake his hand.

So, I was the winner of the Prizeo Reteti Elephant Sanctuary contest this summer! I won flights / hotel for 2 nights in Hollywood, garden box seats at the Bowl, a meet & greet with Dave after the show, a custom Rockbridge guitar, a Nikon DSLR camera, and a week-long trip next year to Kenya! While backstage, I also met Brian from Rockbridge, John Alagia, Oliver Kraus (who played cello as part of the string section on stage that night, and also arranged the strings for the studio cuts of "Come On Come On", "When I'm Weary", and "Come Tomorrow"), and Harry Shearer of The Simpsons.

It was all very shocking when I was notified back on Aug. 24 about winning...I just wanted to say that real people do, in fact, win these types of contests! There were 25,000 total entries from May - August, and the Bama Works campaign raised over $600,000 for the elephant sanctuary. Thanks to all who donated to a great cause, and please know that I made sure to have a little fun for each and every one of you at the show!
