Re: **Official Running Thread**

I assume many of you use GPS watches. I use Strava on my phone for my biking/hiking/and soon to be running activities.

Any recommendations for watches to use with Strava in this price range? https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-01...min+vivoactive

Wife is doing really well on her marathon training. She is registered and should be able to compete a sub4 marathon in May. There is a local 29K in June that my daughter and I will try to run. Pretty liberal cutoff time of 8 hrs so I think we will give it a go.

2nd meeting with my surgeon not so positive, he thinks he feels another hernia, have to wait until March for the earliest possible ultrasound. At that point a decision will be made about a potential third illiotibial band surgery, really down about it but oh well.

i know people with the garmin forerunners but those ones get pretty pricey.

She is now using the Novice 2 plan out of Hal Higdon’s book. She started with Advanced 2, which I told her was too much for her first, but what do I know...lol

I really want to strap some sort of GPS or pedometer to my daughter during her soccer games to see how much ground she covers. It is insane, she can run non-stop. The times of me leisurely running races with her is coming to an end sooner rather than later.

rustysurf, do you use trail running shoes when you are hiking? or hiking boots?

i'm slowly switching over some of my backpacking gear into the ultra light scene. i was also thinking of switching from hiking boots to trail runners. thoughts?

If I am carrying a load I wear these:

Probably the best boot I have ever owned. I rock these 12 months a year with a good sock whether it is 100+ degrees or -20. They aren’t terribly comfortable with snowshoes since they are so minimal, but I tough it out. Until I have to put on crampons, they are bomb. Also suitable if you have to do a quick scramble or two. I think they are a pretty good compromise between a “boot” and runner. I actually had to do some salesmanship to get my boss to reimburse me for them since my receipt said “trail shoes” and I was supposed to be buying a boot.

Just registered for the Marine Corps 17.75K next month. 11.03 miles. Finishers earn an automatic in to the MCM in the fall. See some of you there, probably.

Wow, that is a nice carrot to finish a race. MCM is one of the harder races to get into these days.

Started casually running last year. First race was the Peachtree Road race in Atlanta. This year so far my sister and I have done a 5k, 10k, 15k, did a 1/2 marathon 2 weeks ago and just signed up for the Portland Marathon in October.

So I haven't run long (over 6 miles) since last October. Hurt my foot. Took some time off...started back up recently. Did 5.5 miles on sunday. Felt good. I'd really like to do the flying pig half marathon...but it's on May 6...so 5 weeks away.

Is that too much of a stretch to ramp up over the next 5 weeks?

You may not run fast, but you should be able to finish it. Your long runs the next few weeks could be 8, 10, 12, 10, race. Mix up your runs during the week.

Yes, you could probably finish it but at high risk of injury considering the drastic increase in stress. I would suggest work on getting consistent weekly miles in for a couple months, gradually increasing work load and then reassess when you are more fit.

This is the answer, and advice, that I would follow. The risk/reward for cranking out 13.1 in 5 weeks after a layoff would not be advised. Do some base building for a couple months, then look for something in early fall that tickles your fancy.

it's a tough decision to make but like others said, i don't think it's worth it. without a good foundation you will surely be injured. a late summer/early fall race will probably be a better experience. in the mean time, keep working at consistent running and doing core/hip work

Thanks all...I know this is likely the right answer. But...I have run 4 or 5 halves in the past, so running isn't new to me. While I was off, I kept in really good shape. Did lots of squats/leg presses/cycling. So now I'm in really good shape, and the prospect of waiting 6 months for a race really sucks.

Again, I know it's the "right" answer....

Damn, 18 weeks for a marathon training?! I have but down my training to 12 weeks for most marathons. 18 weeks is so long and so hard not to get burned out before taper. I would think that with your half training, and guessing you run pretty much year round, you should have some good speed and tempo built up. So the marathon training would be more about getting in those long runs and extended tempos. Just a guess and observation from your previous posts on your running experience.

So the marathon training would be more about getting in those long runs and extended tempos. Just a guess and observation from your previous posts on your running experience.
2 years ago I made myself a 30 week training plan worst idea ever

my last 2 marathons (march '17 and oct '17) weren't my best effort in terms of training or weekly mileage. i hardly did speed workouts like I've done in previously cycles

I thought 18 weeks was pretty standard haha. the book also has a 12 week program so maybe I'll consider doing that

I have heard marathon training plans range from 12-20 weeks and so much depends on how much base building you need to do or how experienced you are at that distance. If you need to ramp up milage, then a longer plan make a lot of sense. If you are already doing good milage, have a nice base, then maybe shorten it up a bit. You know what you need to do more then anyone, so following your instinct on that front.

    Re: **Official Running Thread**

The wife and I started running just shortly after the New Year; she is running a leg of a marathon relay with coworkers and I figure I'd join her.

I've always been athletic, and was fast(ish) due to my long legs, but never really ran for distance. When we started, I was struggling to just get to a mile as I would burn out trying to sprint the first half mile and run out of gas.

A few months in, and a new pair of shoes (which makes a world of difference from the old basketball shoes I was using), and I just hit 5 miles for the first time and did it in under 50 minutes. Really pumped about both the distance and pace.

Any tips on the best way to really ramp up distance? I'm not trying to run a marathon or anything, but I'd like to be able to do 10 miles straight at some point this summer

I think you've done the hard part by getting to 5! there are many on here that are far more knowledgeable than me...and I've injured myself a few times by ramping up too quick (and am about to do it again lol) so take this with a grain of salt...My advice would be to try doing 2 short runs a week and one long run. and on the long run, increase by ~10% or so each week.
