Re: Hunger for the Great Light > The Last Stop

Not even close. Not even by a long shot. The Last Stop features deep lyrics combined with emotion and unique sound and comes off an album that can be viewed as their best. HFTGL features none of that and is about oral sex. Wow. I don't care how much energy they play it with, the worst live Last Stop ever would still be better than the greatest Hunger ever. DMB could cover Backstreet's Back by BSB and play the hell out of it with energy but it would still be a really really shitty piece of music. I'm all for differing opinions I guess, but this is off the wall. I need a beer.

I think LB is a great song (not their best, but great), and I truly despise Jimi Thing, even the early versions.

Regarding this thread, while I don't agree, I probably come closer to agreeing than anyone else. I think that sometimes, people confuse rare/not often played live with quality. Last Stop is a good song, but completely overated.

and for the record my LB > Jimi was a joke... i would never seriously say that... though i do enjoy the song, especially with randolph, it has good energy, like a handful of stand up songs, including hunger, but musically and lyrically, stand up is a far cry from anything pre-everday, and overall music and lyrics is more important to me

I don't think LB is any kind of masterpiece or anything. I think it's a decent song with a great groove. There's something about Jimi Thing that just annoys the hell out of me. The music is cheeseball, and they are just about his worst lyrics (at least pre-2000).

I will take LB live over Jimi Thing's current live performance. I've heard Jimi at like every freaking show I've ever been to, and it's getting very very old, and much longer than it needs to be. I don't need to hear it for another 5 years. In 95-96, I was a Jimi fanatic though.

Other than taking LB over Jimi ever in a million years, I totally agree with you. But I feel the same way about a lot of songs, unfortunately. 41, OSW, Watchtower...

one thing i loved about the jimi i heard this summer, was they let roi tear it up for the whole solo, not that i dont like ross, i think he's amazing, i was just happy to see roi dig in for the whole thing...

I guess jimi can get a little monotonous, but its always a little different, and i actually really like butch's scatting, and the groove they do after that

Yeah, a number of the songs are longer than they need to be, but Jimi is the worst offender, followed by Bartender.

disagree with bartender, i love the jam, and i am a big fan of butch, bc i am a big fan of jazz, especially jazz trios (piano bass drums), the bartender jam is pretty much exactly that, and why i love it, along with two step

Do you like Dave Kikoski? I saw him one time at the Blue Note and I thought he was fantastic on the piano.

don't know him, will do research, favorite jazz pianists are art tatum (just INCREDIBLE velocity) and bill evans with his trio, count basie isnt far behind, bc i like swing

I actually really like the jazzy sound of it. It could just be about half the duration, and still work.

i do think that we need to give hunger some space to breathe. hearing it at every show 2k5 and 2k6 taints it a bit i think. give it a 3 year hiatus, bust it out in a few years randomly, and i think fans will enjoy it.

just not now.....not now.

Hunger before Last Stop at a show would be cool, so would Nancies WH Last Stop. But HFTGL is not better than Last Stop, sorry bud. They are both on different DMB levels.

Jimi is definitely WAY too long, although I do like Butch's scat...it also doesn't help that I've heard it at like every show since the dawn of time. Although I will respect the opinion of HFTGL > Last Stop, I will have to disagree. Last Stop is probably my favorite song...I just like the minor chord progression, its cool! Also, the lyrics are awesome.

HFTGL is a complete embarrassment, both musically and lyrically IMO. How this band could have recorded and actually released this song is fucking beyond me.

This thread is a poor excuse for an opinion, better kept to one's self.

as the antsmarching description put it... rapunzel for dummies... but complete embarassment is a little harsh, i like the song, but like i said in another post once, i remember how it completely energized roseland towards the end of that set, and that still makes me smile, even after all the over criticism y'all give it

I just have to disagree. A little harsh? These lyrics are an embarrassment...

Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love

Here you go, you dirty girl
Good God, try to love try to oh
God's love is alive inside you
You know who needs you

I wanna be your hunger
I wanna see you open wide
And then I go down for you
I wanna blow your mind

It's my aim to kill you
My aim to love you

You and I such a pretty thing
Smile, smile, you know you thrill me
Cross your heart and hope to die
You know I'd love to

You and I, oh, oh
Shine, shine

You come like an answered prayer
Praise God, try to love try to oh
I have the little death's delight
Oh, I love you?

You, you, hey you
You, you, ohh
You, you, ohh

And musically...forget about it.

If this song can bring a DMB crowd to their feet then I'd also say I'm embarrassed for them and their musical taste.

And of course, this is just my opinion, agree or disagree. If people want to like this song it's their business.

yes i cant argue with the lyrics, but i think roi and ross have done some nice little additions with the song, and i love their very last note, the long high pitched whale at the end, as my best friend said, makes the whole thing worth it
