As much as we love them and they help us tune out the rest of world and get lost in the music, headphones are a compromise. Cars sound so great because they are contained and consistent units where the speakers have been placed to optimize the sound distribution.
The best sound involves more air. A room dedicated to listening music with a full compliment of speakers to make sure you get the "right" balance of all of the frequencies. Then you start getting into the speaker quality, and you gotta have a Mcintoch tube power amp, and this and that and the other thing. Audiophiles chasing their tails are second only to guitarists in that there's always something more or better that they have to get.
Anyway, a superior mixes (and these super subjective) and great cans (over-ears headphones) provide the best portable and isolated option...and generally the most affordable (even if you drop $300+ on a pair).
Wow, I'm rambling...tangent/rant over.
