Completely agree. I actually think that most of the people on here who hate "Can't Stop" base their dislike more on the lyrics then Fonzie's bass line. Of course I should be careful speaking for 85% of the antsmarching.org population, but that bass line is too funky and groovin' for so many people to hate it. Carter's drum line in the 2010 versions is a great accompaniment to Stefan also.

The masses on this site seem to love Spaceman. Check the Do You Like Spaceman? thread. it was 230 yes to 34 no, or something like that last time I checked.

Dreaming Tree is my fav Fonz Bomb, but I agree with many of the others especially Sugar Will. What the fuck happened to Sugar Will anyway? The version I heard from the Europe tour I absolutely loved, and fully expected it to show up by now. I should prolly make a different thread for that question, but whatever.

Grey Street. You've got to be listening for it to really hear what he's doing, but he manages that song perfectly.

I like this year's versions of the song, but I am still not able to get into the lyrics or the melody. I think it is a very solid bass riff and they should build around the Stefan and write an entirely new song (Dreaming Tree).

I agree with you. I think Stefan is sort of left out because there are so many other things going around, and unfortunately in most cases you need to listen carefully for the bass. Daves guitar riffs clearly stick out, along with Carter's drum work obviously. And of course DMB's most unique attributes are the horns and violin. But Stefan really does mesh in perfectly with the band. He is in a band where nobody really has to try to outshine anyone to be considered good. As a band, they make each other great.

I actually disagree with his solos being any indication of how great a bass player he is. I've said it before, he is one of the tightest and smoothest bass players I've ever heard, and his ability to not only keep up with but compliment Carter Beauford on the drums is ridiculus. So, there are tons of songs that he drops serious Fonz-bombs on that could soothe a crying baby.

BUT, with that said, his Watchtower solos for the most part are rambling and incohesive, and as Simon Cowell would say, "self-indulgent nonsense." If you take away the distortion, effects, and his new pedal manipulation that he's been experimenting with, his solos can be played by any bass player with more than 1-2 years experience. Granted, the effects that he does use on those solos often set the mood and provide a solid intro to Watchtower, which is the whole purpose anyway I guess. But IMO, his solos are no indication of how awesome he is. If those Watchtower intros were all I had to base my opinion of him off, I would definitley not place him in my top 10 favorite bass players of all time. Probably one of the worst in a successful band actually. Luckily, I am familiar with his entire body of work.

I love his riff in Warehouse too. I never really paid attention to him until i started really listening to the studio CDs and he tears all of them up for the majority

Fonz absolutely rocks on: The Stone, #41, The Last Stop, Dreaming Tree, the quieter parts of Kit Kat Jam, Warehouse, Spaceman, Grey Street and much much more.

This is the correct answer. Stefan kills on LT3.
He is also quite good on LT20 Blue Water.

What can I say? It was during the 09 tour. Spirits were high. People liked Big Whiskey. I was caught up in the moment. If it makes y'all feel any better... looking back, I've since changed my mind.

I've always said that the '09 tour is really great. Especially the spring. They seemed to be having a lot more fun compared to the '08 tour (understandably so too) and were really adventurous in the jams. Dave was writing really interesting setlists. The band just seemed to be in a really good place.

I know its hard to believe but I was on here in 2009 and it was widely regarded as a GREAT tour the whole time. I think what killed it was the Gorge 3-night stand where Danny Barnes came out every night. People were so hyped that they would bust out crazy shit that weekend and Dave shit the bed... his voice was shot too. Was a good time on here back then. People really loved Big Whiskey at first. As did I!

But yeah, they should put out some more '09 Live Trax. I feel like people really forgot how great that tour was.

2009 was an absolute pile of shit IMO. They were playing almost the entire BW album a night, Tim was at his loudest, and even the classics sounded like dogshit. One of the worst tours ever IMO.

Look at the epic SPAC N2 show.

If they opened the 2021 tour with that, most of you would say it was a mediocre set with a great encore.

Yeah, agreed. I don't think I would have said that back then if it didn't have some sort of validity to it. It was highly regarded at the time. It probably still would be, if people listened to shows from that year. I don't think a lot of people do a lot of that.
