As far as Sweet Up and Down and Monkey Man, the only thing I can think is that they were deciding between those two and two others. Where Are You Going had to make it, as it was written with “hit” in mind, and You Never Know was the other. I think they could’ve fit SUAD on there as well, it would’ve made the album 58 minutes over 12 tracks rather than 54 minutes over 11 tracks. Big whoop. Monkey Man should’ve at least been played live or released on a bonus disc or some shit
Yeah I think this does make a lot of sense to be fair. My other qualm, and it's a biggy, is why did JTR or SUAD not become live staples. Perhaps for the reasons you mention. Maybe Lillywhite did do a number on the guys but I mean come on, it could easily replace some of their current staples in a heart beat.

Found this old LWS remnant while searching my files. This is probably still out there somewhere, but for those that haven't seen it, it's pretty interesting.

That doesn't make much logical sense though. Supernatural was released in 1999, then the song evolved into JTR during tLWS, and then they played the song a lot in 2000 and 2001. Dave is listed as the composer of JTR for the various live releases. Maybe he would have had to share a co-writing credit with Santana for JTR, but the tLWS evolution probably was different enough to avoid the credit.

you could make the argument that Busted Stuff was a cash grab...a few things lend itself to that. obviously from a mental stand point, dave was a mess during the LWS. he made Everyday and was then able to kick his depression. once ED was released, he was now more mentally prepared to revisit those songs and go back to the studio to finish up the album. plus, we all know dave hates being in the studio, so here is an opportunity to go back to the studio with an album that was already 85% complete. minimal work here. from a PR stand point, they take the angle of "we listened to what our fans said" and decided to go back and finish this album. and then obviously from a financial stand point, this was a gimmie. if i'm cap$haw, this was the perfect scenario.

    Re: Lillywhite Sessions Confession/Story time

Santana would not have been the reason JTR was shelved. Carlos was always about the collaboration. Dave wrote the body of the song, Santana helped shape it. "John The Revelator" is what Carlos would sing to himself over the chorus pattern, Dave picked up on it. Those '99 tour versions are still some of my favorites. When the Deluxe edition of Supernatural was released some ten years later, it appeared as "Rain Down On Me" to differentiate the track from DMB's version, and to avoid confusion with the spiritual song of the same name.

To me, Monkey Man (I remember it was called "Golden Monkey" at some point before the leaks) was just a depression fest that never corrected itself. It was like Kill The King, there was potential but it just wasn't right for the group.

Even the BTCS sessions weren't all roses. When the band was making the next record, they were in such a dark place. If you've never lived the studio life it may not make sense, but when a session is just not coming together it starts to eat at you and the relationships within the group. Then having the label say "where's the Tripping Billies" just spiraled him down further. ED was the swift kick in the ass Dave needed to get over whatever demons he was battling, but unfortunately some of his relationships with the rest of the band weren't pulled out of the mirk with it. That's what started them on the landslide.

My take on BS was that they were going through the motions. There had been an album every other year up until LWS, than ED was churned out quickly to make up for lost time. To get back on track, Busted Stuff. Dave brought several new songs to the table, but I remember Fonzi saying something about the band not wanting to do a gospel-sounding number (that would turn into Save Me on SD). I think they went into the studio with the LWS material and a bunch of newer songs and tried to see what stuck. The rest of the band wasn't feeling most of the newer tunes, but the LWS material had mostly been refined on the road for two years. WAYG had a tie-in with Dave's buddy Adam's new movie, Mr. Deeds; YNK was salvaged from a couple of the new songs. I don't think it was a cash grab so much as it was just going through the motions.

The reason the LWS versions speak more to so many listeneres is that they have a life of their own, the BS versions mostly feel sterile and automatic despite some musical improvements that came with playing the songs in front of crowds.

So, was anybody else here on the street team?
I remember signing up for it. I was on the BS street team - they asked us to go to so many coffee shops / bars and ask them if they'd like a copy of the cd and if they'd hang up a poster, etc.

I'm 99% certain the places I signed up never actually received the cd.
At the time, I had my regular bar sign up and the manager never let me live it down that he didn't get the cd. For a while, he was asking (joking) about it every time I went in, which was at least once / twice / week.

This was an early email I still have saved:

    Hello ATO Street Team!

In conjunction with the release of Busted Stuff we are glad to announce the
formation of the Dave Matthews Band Street Team. We are looking for
dedicated fans who are interested in promoting the band, its albums and
    tour dates.

To join the DMB Street Team, please go to:

    http://www.davematthewsband.com/streetteam/

Everyone that joins will become a DMB Street Team member. Certain members
will also be selected for our first campaign to promote "Busted Stuff".
Campaign members will be selected by geographic region on a first-come,
first-served basis and will be responsible for reporting back to us
regularly. If you sign up for the Street Team, but are not selected for the
"Busted Stuff" campaign it's because we've already filled our quota for
your region. However, each Street Team member has an equal chance of being
selected for future campaigns to help promote Dave Matthews Band. We look
    forward to hearing from you!

    Thank you.

What was the fan reaction at the announcement of Busted Stuff? When fans saw that the track listing was most of the songs from the LWS, what was the excitement level like? Did they hate it when it was released?

I became a fan in like 2003-2004, so I wasn't aware at the time. I know I loved Busted Stuff when I got it, but that was a few years after it was released.

Being disappointed JTR and SUAD Monkey Man didn't make it.

Funny similar things happen in 2018.

That sounds pretty accurate to me. I think the fanbase was excited about these songs getting the full studio treatment, and then when the album dropped...it was like...uh.....ok? And given the love for the LWS songs, there was a good chuck of the base that was all-in and loved the album. But there was this undercurrent of...underwhelment (not a word but should be). Many people, to me, seemed afraid to out and out criticize (sound familiar?) the band or the release. And of course there was the "welp, it's not LWS, but it's still better than 99% of the stuff out there" canned response.

There were a couple of songs that served as "on the fence" examples of BS being a better release than the non-release that the LWS were. Captain, Kit Kat Jam and Raven were used as examples that BS was superior to the LWS. When I think of Busted Stuff, ultimately I think we got You Never Know from those sessions. The rest is a massive missed opportunity to give proper due to some of the greatest songs in the band's catalog.

The album was recorded in two weeks with a sound engineer (Steve Harris did a masterful job on Some Devil, interestingly enough), and it sounded like it was recorded in two weeks with an engineer. The BS studio sessions were essentially the antithesis of the Lillywhite Sessions and it shows in the music.

I mean, the LWS version is lyrically a masterpiece, and musically it’s fucking out there. The breakdown part with the violin and then Carter kicks it with that cymbal work and Dave “why should I, be hypnotized, by the promise of a long life”. That’s some of the best shit my ears have ever heard. BUT, I do love the BS funky version as well. Stefan and Carter fucking own that shit. I can definetly understand liking BS Captain more at face value, but LWS is obviously deeper, more emotional, and is what I’d call a masterpiece.

I still prefer when it was called Crazy and a D&T song, actually. Love those '97 versions.
