Still waiting for the cd and WH bonus disc. Sometimes it takes way too long before the shipment reaches the Netherlands..... Anyone else in Europe still waiting?

You've acquired the music by some other means in the meantime though, yes?

Got the Target Ltd Ed marble vinyl on the way to SPAC from NoVA.

Amazing SPAC shows. We've heard almost all of the new album live except for When I'm Weary and Be Yourself on this tour. One show to go.

    Cheers.

So from the "Lost Studio CDs From 06" thread, these are the track tittles across three discs. I like it ok, but it's hard for me to think of it as a DMB album. Whoever said it feels like a Dave solo album nailed it.

The back half... from Idea of You on is really good. I'm listening to it a lot, but as much as I enjoy listening to it, I find it unremarkable. The new 'DMB sound' or whatever it is is much more homogeneous than it's ever been. I do find Carter's playing recognizable and dynamic as always when he's allowed to do what he does, but that's the only thing that distinguishes this record. With no violin this record desperately needs more horns than it has. It's a missed opportunity, because so many of the songs are good songs.. but lack something to make them feel like they belong to this band.

The sonic experimentation of the band's sound is interesting on the first half, but is more a curious detour than something of substance to me. I like Samurai Cop, but despise Can't Stop. It's a foray into overproduction. That song worked better as a simple groove. Here's it's a Coldplay fans wet dream.

Look, I'm all for the evolution of sound. I'm all for the band evolving from what they were. You can't go on forever and try to recapture past magic. That's futile. But it's like they're trying too hard to do that or something, that they're forgetting what they are.

The aforementioned back half is pretty safe and unremarkable fair, but I like it.

Collectively, this is Dave at his lyrical best in more than a decade. Thematically, I love that he cobbled together songs about love. He stayed away from the low hanging fruit of political discourse this time, and I think that was a bold decision. When we were all wondering why he didn't pick songs like Shotgun, it's clear now why that decision was made, for better or worse... but it gives the album it's centering point and that's a great thing. He doesn't delve into the overt mentions of sex this time either (I just didn't think we needed any more allegorical references to oral pleasure anymore.. it's been covered from DMB). It's his most mature lyrics in an overall sense, and I think that's a big part of what I like about it.

Agree that it sounds like a Dave solo album, but I don't see that as a bad thing as I put Some Devil up there with the Big 3.

Again and Again and Virginia are 2 of their best studio tracks IMO, and the only tune I'm not on board with is the title track. Other than that, such a refreshing sound for me personally.

Let me clarify my post wasn't intended as a retort to yours.. just inspired me to share my thoughts as they are today.

The only problem with the solo album comparison is that it kind of seems to signal the death of what we love about having a distinction between the two... solo albums and band albums. To me, a solo album should be material that is suited to a different lineup. It's not that the song can't be interchangeable. We've seen that some are live. But there is a fair amount of material on Some Devil that seems like it needs to be Dave solo... beyond that, I love that album as well.

but when you don't bring in what's special about the band lineup into an album, as is mostly the case with CT... what's the point of making it a band album? There are three songs there that's mostly or wholely Dave by himself. No need for that on band album, IMO. If it ends up being one song that way... well.. maybe that's ok. But three? That's defying the idea of a band album.

take out She and Can’t Stop...

replace with killer versions of Bismarck and Shotgun..

and this is a great, great album.

as it is, merely very good. does have staying power. still not tired of it after daily listens for a month and a half.

Agree, but I’d rather replace That Girl is You with one of the above instead. I can live with Can’t Stop more than I can with TGIY.

I’d axe CoCo and CT. Both are throwaways:

2 of my top 3 songs on the album. lol

seems this album, more than any other in DMB catalog, really polarizes in terms of which songs are liked/disliked.

i mean, we all hated Stand Up but at least most of us agreed that American Baby ain’t half bad.

Still listen to this often. Keep finding really cool little details. For example, the smooth as hell snare work from Carter on Come Tomorrow starting at 2:39 PM and finishing at 2:42.

Thanks for clarifying that it was PM and and not AM. I didn’t know if it happened in the morning or not.

The high points of this album make me really wish we had a studio Shotgun included. Could have been freaking amazing.

I don't remember where I read it (years ago), but hasn't it been suggested that on the Live Trax vol. 6 version of Idea of You, crowd noise was added to the mix? If you go back and listen it's funny to think about DMB playing a song for the 15th with the crowd is seemingly losing their mind at points. I know they were popular but....

If this is true, does anyone think the crowd noise at the beginning of Idea of You is a nod to the Fenway version of Idea of You?

Man, replace Can't Stop and the title track (heh, yeah, I know...) with Shotgun and SW and this album instantly becomes a lot better.

After the abortion that was Hello Again, I'm not sure if I want to hear Batson's take on those songs. If Cavallo did either better, I'd hope they'd give us that one. Both of those would be smooth as shit if Lillywhite ever got his hands on them. Sadly, that will never happen.

I hear what you're saying and from a song perspective I agree but woof replacing CT with Shotgun from a thematic/lyrical content perspective undermines everything that Dave was trying to accomplish with this record.

Dave also uses the lyric “Come tomorrow” in When I’m Weary. The album could’ve still been called Come Tomorrow and not include the song Come Tomorrow...
