Re: Monsters

This rocks. Shaping up to be an awesome album. Really hope they don’t over-harmonize with Rashawn and Buddy; Dave’s voice sounds so solid on it with just him.

So well put together. I am getting more and more excited for this album with how complete these songs feel. Cannot wait to hear the bass line on this tune.

heard the song once from the YT post and I am indifferent on the song. But have only heard it once. Thank you to the posters for posting the song. The album might be a grower.

This album will go the same way it always does. The songs will be praised at first, but then people will get bored with them after a couple of tours. Madman’s Eyes debut = “your band is back! Dark theme and full band instrumentation!” But, a year from now, it’ll be a 0 or -1 for people because it isn’t new anymore. MME will basically end up being Squirm.

If they would rotate songs more often people would be less inclined to become bored with songs.

LOL....once upon a time long ago, there was a website dedicated to deciphering davespeak and song lyrics/changes; there was more overall DMB related content than that on the site (and active message boards) but that was the base of it. You get a little better at figuring things out over three decades or so of being real quiet and paying close attention. ETA I am not good at understanding much of anything in the live setting, playback is the only way I can figure it out.

Really liking it. It is very reminiscent of the Some Devil tunes mentioned above and that's a great thing imo. It sounds very much like the sound of old we love. Can't wait to hear a full band version.

Unfortunately this is probably true. It seems to happen more with songs that are more or less the same every time. Pretty sure it would take longer for people to turn on them if there were more sections for improvisation and room to breathe.

Also, Monsters sounds pretty cool. After one listen, there are loads of shelved songs I like more, but I do still like it and am looking forward to the album.

Most of it was pretty clear, but there's definitely a few mumbley spots where it's hard to make out what he's singing.

That seems right. I kept hearing "broke home", but "broken" makes a lot more sense.

    Quote:
No rope to hang the damned

That'd an interesting possibility. Different that what I heard, but I could see that being right. Will need to check this out further and in future performances and/or on the album.

Another good catch that I think could be right. No one seems to be able to get that full line, though.

Overall, it's definitely an interesting song lyrically and musically. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more of it.

Probably. DMB fans are a fickle bunch.

But it's worth noting that MME was played at essentially nearly every stop last year, and it doesn't seem like anyone's tired of it yet.

Monsters is a fantastic song, but it isn't going to be a song people will be clamoring to hear live, after they've heard it once, unless full band performances feature more improvisation. It's like Black and Blue Bird; it's a melodically and lyrically strong midtempo track that will sound fantastic in the studio but not really translate in large venues when it's being played alongside high energy sing-alongs like Warehouse, Grey Street, DDTW, etc. Ultimately, I think Monsters will be like DYR; a song that people enjoy and respect but not one they go into a show really hoping to hear once the novelty wears off.

I’m not sure I agree. I can imagine the choruses being quite big-sounding with horns and drums.
Curious to see how it turns out studio and live.

In a million years I never would’ve compared this to DYR or B&BB.

You don't call a song Monsters and not do something cool with it. I think the band will add a lot to it. I already really like it, and it's actually in Dave's range, which is when he's at his best.

This song is wonderful. So stoked. Love the rhythmic transitions between the different parts which Dave seemed to have a hard time keeping up with, which was awesome to see. There’s a lot going on and obviously it’s brand new. Sooooo interested to hear what the band dies with this. Love the lyrics too. Already feels like a song I’ll be going back to a lot.

In addition to the song itself being cool, it's cool to see how it vibes with the other tracks. I listened to this and SFTW right after, and I must say it's shaping up to be a pretty sad/dark ending to the record.
