  1. Graduation rate
  2. Polling from high school guidance counselors
  3. "Academic reputation", as rated by a poll of school presidents, provosts, and deans of admissions
  4. Freshman retention rate (in other words, the first year drop-out rate)
  5. Faculty financial resources
  6. Student selectivity
  7. Financial resources spent on students
  8. Graduation rate performance (the %-age of students graduating weighed against the magazine's projected graduation rate, as based on the Class of 2007's graduation rate)
  9. Alumni donation rate

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see a topic about the US News college rankings on Ants of all places... I thought only angsty, high-achieving high schoolers cared about these lists.

the school i plan to attend is ranked 143 overall, but #16 in my major.

i could probably go to the #3 ranked (same school, different campus), but it means moving 2 1/2 hours from the gf, and i don't really think rank matters very much... especially if you're staying within the top 25 in your field. plus i'm a non-trad student, so companies won't be hiring some 22 year old with no work experience.

I had no idea some of the colleges I got accepted to were as high as they are though. I definitely made the right choice for me though. I don't think at any other of those schools I would have been able to spend three years writing for good sized daily paper, a year as an editor on the student and had internships with a Fortune 100 company, state agency and national magazine.
