Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

My quick thoughts on Blue Water:

* No matter what versions are real or not, being able to say I heard it in any capacity is huge for me. Yes, even though the Almanac lists it as a partial (Boone, NC '03). I think it's hilarious that so many people took their bathroom break for Tim's solo and missed out on Blue Water... but the people that took their bathroom break during a Tim solo would most likely not even know the song so whatever.

* Speaking of the Almanac, Stefan's quote about BW is really cool. BW has been a top 5 DMB song for me, and Floyd is my fave band. I never knew this connection until literally right now.

Quote:
"I loved the responses and am with you on Blue Water.... One of my all time favorites. The solo section bass line from that song was inspired from listening to Pink Floyd all the time when I was 18. The lyrics...beautifully dark...we were a young band when that song was written...

...Look what you all have done to me, I'm feeling a bit melancholy at the moment :-)

Till Tour"

Do people technically consider the non-truncated Hello Again to be officially released?

That's a tough one. I guess you can say it's technically the version they used on the CD, but they just cut the ending off to make way for the transition to Louisiana Bayou. Speaking of which, that's the worst piece of editing I've ever heard. No effort put into it whatsoever, just an abrupt cutoff and it's like "oh a different song is playing now".

It’s on YouTube. I hesitate to say it leaked because it was on a promotional CD that was sent to Australia before Stand Up was released. Then I think there were last minute changed that cut it.

    Here it is-

Correct. It wasn't leaked but it was sent out to Australian radio stations via CD. I'd love to get a copy of one someday, but then again they can just put it on the next Best Of What's Around Vol. 2 bonus CD to make it cheaper for the rest of us.

Stand Up was a while ago, so if this knowledge was once well known, forgive me... why was Hello Again edited to "flow" into Louisiana Bayou? The album is 56 minutes, so it fits fine on a CD, but it would be too big for a standard single vinyl even with the cut.

Was that done just for artistic reasons?

Something just occurred to me. On the studio version of Black And Blue Bird, there's sirens at the end. On Big Whiskey, Cavallo used transitions between some songs. I wonder if B&BB was originally going to transition into another Cavallo produced track with the sirens bridging the songs? If that's the case, it was cut because the next track is COCO, which is produced by Batson, and the sirens don't fit in with COCO.

Maybe it was going to lead into Samurai Cop.

Was just listening to some old Blue Water performances over the weekend. 4.2.93 and 3.23.93 (Big League Chew)

The outro section you speak of is so damn good. Especially that Big League Chew jam. Carter + Roi. My god. Glad to see some Blue Water discussion going on in here, it’s one of my personal favorites.

With all the Blue Water talk I had to revisit that one. I never listen to it. It’s been ages. Listened to the Big League Chew version and I genuinely don’t understand how this song ever fell off the map. Maybe no studio version but I could see it occupying the Seek Up spot once in a while.

I love Jeff's style of playing on this version of You Never Know-

    https://youtu.be/ZI91Zy9wPVc

He doesn't play as aggressively as he usually does during his solo, reminds me of Roi a bit.

Well, there's a reason almost every Live Trax from before 1996 has a guest. The band wasn't using their own multitrack equipment. I'm sure there's others out there.

9.08.93 would be amazing if they had a multitrack recording of that night, a Blue Water and another Spotlight.

Buddy playing violin sounds is cringey.

I’m a huge Buddy fan, and him replacing Boyd has reinvigorated my interest in DMB. Haven’t seen them since 2015 and for the first time in seven years I’m actually super excited to see them again.

But let the violin be gone. I love the rearrangements of Boyd’s parts for the most part. But don’t replicate violin sounds with a different instrument.

Rashawn has made some nice tweaks to his sound to cover Boyd’s parts once in a while. That violin line at the end of Grey Street is so integral to that part of the song and for the most part I’m glad that at least someone’s playing it. But I think it would sound better if Rashawn played that part and let Jeff rip that solo. It won’t happen because that horn duel has become an unfortunate staple in an otherwise incredible song.

One of my favorite parts of 21/22 has been Buddy including Boyd melodic lines that were absent in 18/19. It was much more cringey IMO when some of those parts were just empty.

How is that better than electronically replacing them? I’ll never understand. Everyone has their own preferences, so I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just don’t get it. The player isn’t there to play it. How is that cringey?
