Re: That Girl Is You

It really sounds like the same production aesthetic as the studio “Take Me To Tomorrow.“ it’s grown on me, but still feels more Dave solo than DMB

Welp, that's because it is. No other band member played an instrument.

My fault I thought he had a writing credit on it. Knowing that actually gives me less hope for the album.

This song is jus dave fuckin around for 3 mins and I'm completely ok with it. People on this board give me 2nd hand embarrassment with their meltdowns sometimes. Def more Dave solo vibe than DMB for obvious reasons and I'd prefer Dave doesn't try singing it live often, but I like it.

Posted this in the CT thread, and I apologize if this was previously posted in here as well. Confirms it’s a Dave solo track.

Nah, if this song proves anything, it proves that Dave needs to stop masturbating in session, then releasing it to the masses.

BUT, i'm not the most optimistic a live version could sound better (or close) than this.

Listening to this song is driving me crazy. The same three chords, sounds SO so familiar, reminiscent of some other Dave or DMB performance ... I'm just struggling to figure it out. Anyone else thinking this sounds like something else from their past repertoire?

Ahh yes, The Lost Flatulence volumes that were circulated through various back channels and alley ways. I was fortunate enough to catch a whiff back when these were wafting around.

While I agree that it's not a great DMB track (that is to say, it's a Dave solo song)... the track itself is growing on me after just a couple listens. Those freaking out about the vocal track and professing to have some kind of empirical evidence that it's world-class bad vocal tracking... I don't think you've listened to enough music in your time.

I'm thinking back to my experience of the Stand Up album... I am not having that kind of worried feeling yet. Samurai Cop is a great opener, and this track is indeed "Dave f*cking around" but endearing in the way he tends to be when he's enjoying himself.

This is a beautiful song that i can’t stop listening to. Watch out for when (not if) they bring in the horns/keys live.

The music by itself is better than most of the new songs since AFTW. I’ll take this over Bismarck, Bob Law, VITR, BY, PG at a concert any day of the week. This has more groove than any of those and I’m sick of people being ok with (or calling songs good) when the songs have good lyrics but bad music. Dave gets back on a guitar instead of a piano and the lyrics shift to Dave’s sweet spot which is simplicity with depth

The vocals are raw but oh well.

I kind of like it. It's catchy. Dave's vocals don't really bother me, except for two points where I think he drags out a line just a bit too long (2nd Hallelujah and the last one). Lyrics don't bother me because the vocal delivery draws most of the attention.

It's a little lame that it follows the same flow as Samurai Cop. It builds for two verses, then drops for the last one. It sounds like they both work towards a high point but drop before getting there. I think TGIY could've really used that extra kick, especially since it comes so soon after Samurai Cop which uses the same trick.

It's kind of amazing that the notorious "questionable choices" for DMB albums is something going strong in 2018. Like leaving Bismarck off. It's oddly impressive. In a bad way.

I finally “get” TGIY. After the initial confusion of hearing something much different than what I was expecting had worn off, and I had listened to it 20 times, it finally clicked. I dig it. Maybe the herb helped. I don’t know.

No, it’s not what I would consider to be a DMB song. In fact I think I saw someone mention that it’s a Dave solo (I haven’t had time to backread in depth.)
But it’s not a bad song in my opinion. And that’s the fun thing about music and art. Some people will like it and some people won’t.

It inspired me to pick up my guitar and noodle around with the guitar pattern Dave plays and it was a fun rhythm to jam on. It had me bouncing to it. If you play guitar, you should try it out. It’s obviously simpler to play than a lot of his songs, but still has a classic, percussive Dave feel.

The moral of this story is that you should like the song. Or don’t. Just don’t let other people’s negative opinions of it sway you from being excited about what we haven’t heard off the album yet. For those keeping count, we’ve only heard 2 out of 12 studio cuts. Give it a chance and chill out with all of “the sky is falling” garbage. Your favorite band is releasing a new album for the first time in 6 years.

Its a skip track for me after the first full listen through of the album. I don't hate it; I just won't need it.

To be honest, I suspect when I spin Come Tomorrow on the reg I'll start the album at She. I can honestly skip the first 4 tracks and not feel like I'm missing anything crucial.

    Well. I like this song.

I definitely wanted it to do something more, musically. Would have been nice if there was a strong little jam at the end of it. This is for sure a new direction for DMB, and I think it sounds great- I do think there was more for the band to do on this track that was wasted. Felt the same about SC, so maybe the theme for this album is "stripped." But this song works for me.

Is brilliance the reasoning we are talking about it? Because it's terrible. No. It's disappointment.

And also the fact this is what the "band" chose to put...whatever this is... out as single #2 ahead of some really great songs we already know and love. That has something to do with it too. It is not the brilliance or whatever TGIY is.

It's playful, joyful and basically a simple, easy-going tune.

It once again shows the diversity of DM/DMB's music.

    It's a yes for me!

Immediately reminded me of Seven, which is not a good thing. Really crappy and makes me very unenthused for this album. Seems like it'll be decent at best. Says a lot when I can already assume that Big Whiskey and AFTW are going to be superior albums. Should've included Shotgun, Break Free, JTR, and countless other experimental songs from the last 15 years.

This is the first post I've made here for like 10 years under another user ID. Whatever ID I had back then. I can't remember. Anyway, I was a huge DMB fan in the early 2000s. I was here and on Nancies.org for the whole Lillywhite Sessions nonsense. And here I am again. This song is fucking awesome. I'm sorry/not sorry. But not since Some Devil has Dave or his producers decided to do something raw and interesting. Since my early DMB fandom, I've branched-out into a lot of indie band and Tom Waits shit in my day-to-day music on-the-road life. And you know what? DMB has been disappointing in years past for trite lyrics and formulaic production. But this is the first DMB song for years that simply doesn't give a shit. It is raw and the lyrics or the precise composition of absent violin vs absent sax doesn't matter. Is it a solo Dave song? Who cares? It is musically interesting, and like many Dave songs, it is less about the lyrics than the feeling. And this song feels interesting. I like it. It is appropriate for 2018. And it holds its ground against anything that has been released by anyone this year. So be appreciative that either Dave or DMB or one of the producers pays attention to NOW. DMB's ecclectic nature introduced me to dozens of new and interesting bands. And this song holds its own. Even if it's just a short phrase repeated with guitars and drums. If you're pining for a reincarnation of "What would you say", you're like Tom Waits fan, pissed off in 2018 that he hasn't made make 1975's Nighthawks at the Diner lately. Music evolves, man. This song is raw and fascinating. Embrace it as a gift.

*hasn't made. See? Be raw. Say what you feel. That's what That Girl is You does. You think Dave's crackling voice is laziness or an accident? Nothing is happenstance. This is simply good stuff.

BTW, who in the hell is all worked-up about "radio singles" in 2018? I work in media for a living. Than average adult spends less than 90 minutes per-day listening to "the radio" and FM singles. Get over it. The internet won. Radio singles are irrelevant. They have no authority over what's interesting and what isn't. This song is fucking interesting.

We're fans from a similar time period, which I find amusing because we have polar opposite views of this song. I'm of the mindset that its so far into their career, the last thing i want to hear is a DMB track where they dont give a shit. There have been enough sub-par tracks over the last 12 years, you'd think they'd want to put more effort in.

I appreciate it for what it is, which is basically a Dave solo track. But put it on a Dave solo album, not a DMB album, which are far and few these days.
