At the center of the claims lies the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga., which houses immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is run by LaSalle Corrections, a private company that operates similar facilities in three Southern states.

Dawn Wooten, a nurse who worked at the facility until her sudden demotion in July, filed a whistleblower complaint on Monday outlining what her lawyers called "recent accounts of jarring medical neglect at ICDC."

The complaint also raises red flags about the rate at which hysterectomies — the surgical removal of the uterus — are performed on immigrant women detained at the facility.

The complaint says that several immigrant women expressed concerns to Project South about a high rate of hysterectomies and that Wooten and other nurses at the facility questioned the number of women undergoing the procedure as well as their ability to fully understand and consent to it.

According to the complaint, a detained immigrant told Project South that she talked to five women at the facility who received hysterectomies between October and December 2019 and said they "reacted confused when explaining why they had one done."

"When I met all these women who had had surgeries, I thought this was like an experimental concentration camp," the woman told Project South. "It was like they're experimenting with our bodies."

We need to be talking more about the forced sterilization of immigrant women in detention centers. I know some folks got upset when the detention centers were called concentration camps. They pointed to the fact that the internment sites existed prior to this administration. Okay, fair, though I'd argue how they are used is important, but we've had that debate. I know they didn't like the comparisons to Nazi Germany when we bring up the family separations. I know they don't like the comparisons to gestapo/secret police when unmarked DHS agents are taking people into unmarked cars and off the streets.

But how far can it be pushed before we acknowledge the growing ugliness; the rapid march to full blown fascism and the alarming comparables?

Can also be held in contempt of congress, which if convicted carries a minimum sentence of 1 month in federal prison and $100 fine and a maximum of 12 months/$100k.

I don't have any reason to single ky out in particular, but my general experience is that unless an issue involves the flag or the troops or an outdated perception of what America "used to be", then righties don't give a fuck about anything unless it directly impacts them or happens to them.

Its horrible.

This is one of the real impacts of having a guy like Trump in the WH, there is so much misdirection and major issues to deal with on a daily basis that an issue like this is not in the top 10 of biggest issues this country needs to deal with for some lawmakers. We should have a full blown investigation into this and right any wrongs that have been done, but its so hard to envision that happening with the dysfunction happening.

I'm not trying to belittle this, its really terrible stuff. But so is election fraud, russian bounties, COVID deaths, Bannon stealing from MAGAs after lying to MAGAs, etc. etc. etc. I'm not saying equivalent, but they are all bad for a democracy in one way or another, they all need to be dealt with, and there are just not enough people and time in the day to deal with them all.

I didn’t equate anything. I don’t even know what that means in this context.

It just doesn’t make sense that you actually think we’re careening towards fascism and then literally want to weaken the amendment of the constitution that is literally designed for that scenario.

If you're under the impression that gun owners would ever have a remote chance to compete against the US military then you are living in a fantasy world, my friend.

And the 2nd amendment was included in the BOR to protect the USA against foreign invaders, because at the time a strong central democracy was unattainable and the Revolutionary army had just been essentially disbanded. Protection of the republic was delegated to local militias during this time which is why the 2nd amendment exists.
