So far I've counted:

1) Deluxe black 180g
2) White variant
3) Lavender variant
4) Red variant (Target exclusive)
5) Blue variant (Walmart exclusive)
6) Green variant (Barnes and Noble exclusive)

5 of which are exactly the same except the color. Like...why? That's absurd.
There must be money in it!

U2 has so far announced 10 different vinyl versions of their upcoming album (including a one that has the Boston Celtics logo on in): https://twitter.com/u2songs/status/1...7Ctwgr%5Etweet

The poster, like me, may still follow the band (and be on these boards) for those times a pre-2005/2008/pick-whatever-year-you-want-as-the-cutoff-date LiveTrax is released

They're offering some interesting options. It would definitely incentivize people to pre-order, especially fan club members. And potentially make them want to buy a 40 track version as well.

4LP Super Deluxe Collector’s Boxset (Limited Edition) (40 Tracks)
4CD Super Deluxe Collector’s Edition (40 Tracks) [Available in SHM in Japan]
    2LP Black Vinyl (16 Tracks)
Deluxe CD (Limited Edition) (20 Tracks) [Available in SHM in Japan]
    CD (16 Tracks)
SHM-CD (17 Tracks, Japan Only, “With or Without You” is the extra bonus track)
    Digital Album (40 Tracks)
2LP Crystal Clear Vinyl (Limited Edition) (20 Tracks – Fan Club Subscriber Exclusive for first 48hr)
    White Cassette (16 Tracks)

Has it ever been clarified whether the vinyl comes with a digital download of the album too?

Especially at what they're charging for a single vinyl. Most folks are asking about $30 for a two LPs and providing a digital copy.

DMB mgmt, blazing their own trail...

Re: How many folks pre-ordered WATM?

I think many people buying vinyl do so because they think it's better than digital, not realizing in 99% of cases all formats have been made from the exact same digital master.

I love physical media, and the catalogue releases of DMB vinyl have been almost uniformly excellent. The new studio albums on vinyl over the past 15 years have all been almost uniformly rubbish. I'll likely go to the mall on release date and pick it up from Sunrise Records on good old CD. Dave's affinity for heavy-handed mastering sounds better on digital than it does on vinyl anyway.

I would have pre-ordered the CD and sucked up the Canadian shipping if there had been any bonus materials for sure.

Then once it appears on sites like HD Tracks I'll probably blow another US$20 on a 24-bit download just to discover it's exactly the same as the CD and probably all mastering moves were done at 24/44.1 like CT and AFTW.

(Still excited for said CD though, don't get me wrong)

Like Doby, I'm a physical media guy... but if the band releases the album as cd quality flacs, or better (HD Tracks is looking quite nice, I've never been there), I'm going that route. Less space to fill up.

It's strange they don't have a 24 bit FLAC option right in their own store. They did for a couple Live Trax in the past.

I mean that's literally the only reason to pre-order something other than availability, and its not like availability is a concern here.

I did. Years ago. Every now and then I check back in to see if they've done anything redeeming, but they're clearly past that point now.

Amazon used to (or maybe still does) have what they called AutoRip, which would give you the mp3s of a physical album you bought. I don't see that option with the preorder for WATM, though.
Not maybe. Definitely still does. I just got an email that I can download mp3s and/or stream it in Amazon Music since I bought the CD there.
