I don't generally care about the lyrics unless they are cringey. The lyrics are fine and the song sounds good to me. I'm looking forward to hearing the band on this.

I think people generally say it’s great because it’s a return to Dave’s natural vocal range and it’s just nice on the ears. I say it’s solid.

Listening to the D&T tape, song has so much potential. Chorus is great and verses again just feel uninspired. Another song with “1,2,3…counting cards, pick up stick” just bleh. Can’t wait to hear it with the full band. I want Jeff to rip a sweet solo after Dave is done singing but I’m sure it’ll be a Buddy or Rashawn solo -_-

I think no solo is much more likely.

If they put a Buddy solo at the end in the style of ToT I'm done with this band

    For like a half hour

    Re: Monsters

This song very much has a Tom Petty feel to it where it’s just easy and pleasant to listen to (that’s a compliment) but you can’t quite pinpoint why. Can’t wait for studio version. I can picture the band doing a lot with it but I get the feeling it will be very bare on the album (based on nothing)

I especially like the 2nd chorus. It seems to pack more of a punch.

    Re: Monsters

I like the song, but the lyrics and delivery of the “the devil wants your soul but Jesus saves” line feels real forced and lazy, made worse by the fact that it’s repeated.

Also I’ve found that when this song plays in my head, it always morphs into the bridge of Up and Away without me realizing it.

haha I just wish they would diversify their solo slots. It's everyone BUT Jeff, which in my opinion helps maintain that true DMB sound of the sax. Sax has been an after thought the last 5 years which just sucks. Tim and Buddy are great, but they don't need to have EVERY single solo for these songs

    OATB - features Jeff
    WATM - features Jeff
    MME - features Jeff

I think these newer songs show a clear intention to get him more involved than CT, whether it be as a solo night to night or written part

You can definitely feel the lift when they swap the chorus lines in the 2nd chorus. My favorite part so far is the 2nd verse into 2nd chorus.

Just listened to this one for the first time. I got a weird indirect evolution of "Toy Soldiers" vibe off of it.

    Re: Monsters

^ Good ear. It sounds like a similar progression for the verse in Monsters but at double-time compared to TS. Combine that w/ the toy soldiers lyric, and you do have to wonder...

    Re: Monsters

I like the song, and definitely am interested to hear the full band studio cut. Only problem is that I wish it was longer. Song ends too soon for me. So this really scares me about the 4 unheard tunes. Especially the 3 that are only 2 min. and some change.

I'm not saying you can't make good short songs. But as we've all discussed, short songs have never been DMB's forte. And if they are decent, I'm sure I'll still wish they were longer, like I wish Monsters was.

Dave’s strumming pattern is exactly the same as VITR.

Now it makes sense why I like this song so much...To me it's VITR + Up & Away.

Beginning def has the VITR vibe...the second half = "Killer's Eyes...and Painted Faces" section gives me the Up & Away vibe

Overall it's a nice tune with D&T...Full band studio should hopefully deliver the goods.

I love the "Killers eyes and painted faces..." part, and feel like they should return to that section a second time before the song ends, but alas, it ends pretty soon after that.

Monsters is a cool little song. I'm sure the studio version will be colorful and fun. Nothing classic or anything but a cool tune

I think it's a forgettable song personally. Maybe the album version will change my perspective.

I’ve been messing around with it on guitar, and the first chord is pretty much the first/intro Captain chord without the 9
