I was at the Darlington Race and the Coke 600 this weekend. It has been a fun two races in three weeks, although the Coke 600 was a marathon with the weather. Both races were fantastic experiences for me though. The Next Gen car runs amazing on those size tracks and we got great racing.
As for Chase Elliot....
I consider myself a Chase fan, but really, I like most of the drivers well enough. One of my favorite parts of being a motorsports fan is that I don't have a team or driver I live or die with. I do wear a Chase hat at races these days though. With that said, he absolutely hooked Hamlin there. I was sitting high up right at the entrance to turn 1 and it was clear as day that he turned left into Hamlin. 1 race suspension is appropriate for that action.
Hamlin was driving like a prick leading up to that moment for sure though. However, you don't put a driver's life at risk with retaliation. A lot of people are probably too young to remember some of the deaths in stock car racing at tracks like Charlotte, but I remember Blaise Alexander being killed there in 2001 in a similar impact after crashing with K. Earnhardt. It is a very dangerous section of those shaped tracks and you shouldn't be messing around like that there.
Safety has come a long way since that time, but the Next Gen car is a step backwards with safety so the risk is not worth it for just losing your temper. Chase could have waited to turn him on the back stretch for example. Hamlin can be a prick, but no one deserves to be put in that situation.
