Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

A few things moved placement too, so it "looks" sometimes like there's less. Mostly all that's missing is the big crash above the chimes, and the smaller cymbal under the back left one. But, he added a China above the rides.

The beloved granite blocks are also gone now. If DMB posts my kit update, it'll show you an in depth look at his current setup for this tour.

    Have you ever had the chance to meet Carter and talk shop?

    Never unfortunately. I have a voicemail from him from 2013 and that's it. Management has tried a few times and he usually is too busy. Now that backstage is restricted due to covid, I doubt it ever happens.

    Fortunately, his tech and I have become friends and I get to check the kit out and talk shop every show. I think knowing him is probably better than meeting Carter and it being a one and done thing. His tech is the nicest, most accommodating guy ever. Very appreciative of his time and friendship.

    I get the gear geekery, as a guitar and bass geek, but TS has it right...

    Nothing about the set Carter uses means anything, certainly not the overall size. Specific pieces not being available aren't a big deal either, especially if he has a pad that triggers any samples (in which the granite block sounds could accessible). As long as he's in good shape and playing well, and we've seen nothing that suggests otherwise during his career, he'll get and give the most out of whatever set-up he's using at a given time.

    Exactly. For the most part, Henry runs the kit anyways. If Carter wants something different, he'll mention it. But he and Henry's relationship is so close, he doesn't even really care what's up there. Henry takes care of him and the kit completely. Carter has to worry about nothing really.

    Hey aparker507, just want to take this opportunity to ask you a few questions as a fellow drummer. Feel free to completely ignore this post

    Do you have info or pictures on Carter's 2014-2015 acoustic setup?

    What do you think the hardest song is for Carter? I read somewhere that he said it's What You Are because of the hi-hat pattern, but this was years ago and I'm not sure whether or not to believe that.

    Do you ever write a 15ish song DMB setlist and play it on the drums? I do that sometimes.

    I actually sat at the 15 acoustic kit in Rogers. Dallas 14, Henry was running way behind so we just talked for a quick second in the lounge.

    The 15 drums were given to him from Quest love. The snare was the AVH Rosewood still. Cymbals switched some, but were:

    13" a new beat hats
    18" Kerope then 18" k dark medium thin crash, zil bel and Chinese wedding bell on top
    20" a custom flat ride with 6" a custom splash on top
    22" k custom medium ride
    24" k light ride

    I believe he also had the bongos and congas on that kit.

    14 was a little thrown together.... Henry got the 10" pork pie and bongos from guitar center if I remember right. Cymbals on it were:
    12" A special recording hats
    14" k crash with 6" A custom splash on top
    16" K or Armand crash with 8" splash on top
    20" oriental crash of doom then moved to a 22" Kerope

    Kick was a Cajon they got sent to them.

    I remember hearing Carter say WYA and Dreamgirl oddly enough were 2 of his hardest songs. He doesn't play WYA with that hi hat pattern anymore for sure.

    I play with Dave Matthews Tribute Band some, and I'll mostly practice DMB songs for those. Sometimes I'll make a note of songs I want to attempt.

    Cheers!

    I loved Carter's drum setup at those two Weather Report tribute shows in 2017. It was a slight variant on the '15 acoustic set kit, I think?

    Sweet! Thanks for the response! Appreciate the detail, cheers!

    Dreamgirl is definitely an odd answer...but he's the man, so there must be something about it

    Simon Phillips and Dennis Chambers are still going strong, no reason why Carter can't.

    3 drumming sons of the Tony Williams and Billy Cobham drummer's family tree.

    Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

    Things I miss from previous iterations of this band:

    * Seek Up second chorus violin part
    * Warehouse chorus violin plucking
    * Last Stop outro
    * Grey Street violin riff at end (but tbf Buddy fills this in sometimes)
    * Dancing Nancies violin during pre-chorus (look up at the sky)
    * Too Much violin interludes (currently filled with random noise?)
    * Big Eyed Fish violin plucking line at end of the song that plays these notes: D E G F# D E A B D A B A G F#, D E F# G A G A B D E
    * Break Free horn outro
    * Break For It acoustic guitar not playing octaves that don't really match the chord progression
    * Violin in choruses of So Right and So Much to Say on top of the horn line
    * Violin plucking in Two Step choruses
    * #36 outro to Everyday missing Boyd's melody (which is the main melody - the lines Jeff and Rashawn play should both be harmonies on top of the violin melody)

    Things that I like better with this iteration:
    * Sweet outro
    * Grace is Gone outro
    * Funny the Way It Is (I like Buddy's keys on the build up to "but he can't stop trying") although I do miss the violin in the verses here too

    there are definitely more things I like better, just can't think of them right now

    Either way, without a violin this iteration of the band is pulling everything off pretty well! These are just some things that I've noticed are missing.

    I think they made the right decision to get rid of Boyd. If you ever see video of the band when he hits a skree, Dave always looks over at him in pure horror.

    They could've brought in a different violinist. But I imagine it's difficult to have the same energy Boyd had.

    A lot of people consider the Fenway Break Free the definitive version, I was there and don't remember it all and haven't listened to LT6 in at least a decade. I'll say though I absolutely love the current version of the song, especially the jam.

    He stays on the bus or in the dressing room I'm 99% sure lol. Covid has ruined the last 2 years of my chances. Sometimes I wonder if he just also likes to keep to himself and isn't one for meeting strangers not off the street kind of interaction thing. Hopefully next year!

    Is it out of the realm of possibility that the new pre chorus lyrics in TOT were inspired by the ScarJo film “Under The Skin”? I’d imagine Dave has seen it and just maybe, he watched it in between the 21-22 tours. Just fun speculation. He did in fact sit next to her on Letterman so there is a shot in the dark connection there. I won’t spoil the film, but the new line matches up with an important scene in the movie.

    carter is just not a super meet-and-greet-y guy. years ago i made a drawing that i tried to get signed before camden n2 as i knew where the band stayed. i got dave, stefan, and boyd to sign it in one day. carter just walked by and waved. tried another time and same thing. tried hanging out in the hotel bar after the shows and met rashawn and tim (and lawlor), but not carter. it took bringing it and a sign into the pit at fiddler's a few years back to get him to sign it. he almost didn't even see it but thankfully did and told me to pass it up. took i think 7 years for that to happen. covid certainly isn't making things any easier, but if you want to try to meet him, just keep trying. it does happen, just not as often as some of the other guys.

    Looks like they cut off about 5 minutes off of the recent average Dreaming Tree in Austin on Saturday. Ran 15+ minutes from 2012-15. Saturday's clocked in at 10:32. Hope that trend continues.

    What’s really striking lately is last year was the year that I realized “wow, Carter and Dave are starting to look their age” and this year every photo I’ve seen of Fonz has had a similar feeling. It’s weird seeing the band you grew up with slowly turn into classic rock looking rockstars.

    Listening to Tuesday's Two Step, this band can still say, 'fuck around and find out.'

    I'm not loving the state of Dave's voice, and I hate typing that out, but it's a fact. Otherwise, this seems like it will be a high quality tour for 2022 DMB.

    As far as his voice, obviously age and recording vocals for an album take a toll. But if it was THAT hot down there, I know for me I always end up with a raspy rough voice when I’m in too much air conditioning.

    Spring is in the air here in Denver and I woke up today with some hoarseness, not denying that fact. Dave feels and sounds mid-50s though. Just an observation. Saw a post about Stefan looking his age. 31 years as a touring band takes its toll.

    Seems like Seven is out of Dave's vocal range now. That's a shame.
