Stand Up is a great album...there I said it.

That's right! I love Stand Up and I'm not afraid to say it! Is it "Before These Crowded Street"? No. Were the '04 songs better and recorded by the right person would have made an incredible album? Yep. But did that happen? Nope. So get over it. The songs on Stand Up are really good and deserve every play they get.

Dreamgirl - is a nice little love song and doesn't deserve the hate and '05 versions have some BEAUTIFUL Roi work
Old Dirt Hill - was not my favorite but grew on me
Stand Up - is so much fun and is reminiscent of old DMB(especially live with Lawlor) also doesn't deserve the hate
American Baby - is kick.ass.
American Baby Intro - OWNS
Smooth Rider - (it's 2 minutes of a 14 track album + bonus tracks...move on people, it's not that bad)
Everybody Wake Up - is as close to the "old DMB sound" as it's going to get on the album
Out of My Hands - is just beautiful
Hello Again - (OK...Batson fucked this one in the asshole)
Louisiana Bayou - is Tripping Billies-esque and is awesome live
Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd - is a great interaction between Roi and Boyd and as we all found out from the Share your unpopular DMB opinions. thread, it's a secret fan favorite
You Might Die Trying - is an ass kicker - especially live
Steady As We Go and Hungry for the Great Light - are fucking terrible and are what gives Stand Up a bad name. Hungry for the Great Light does kick ass live though, but it is the bands WORST studio recording.

All that being said I am expecting the usual responses such as "just, no", "you're an idiot", "if you love this album then you're not really a DMB fan", , , "hahahaha" and so many more. But the more you start appreciating what the band gives us and quit comparing everything to "The Big 3" then the happier you may find yourself as a DMB fan. I love Stand Up. I love Everyday. I love Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. I am, and always be, the biggest Dave Matthews Band there is. Every band deserves a chance to experiment with their sound. That's just how art works. You push your boundaries, you try new things, just how it works. Best lyrics ever? No but a great album from a great band.

I like the songs from Stand Up in a live environment much more than on the album. From another thread, my preferences:

I've said it a thousand times...Stand Up kind of has a demo sound to it. I think, had they played the songs live for a summer and let them grow a bit more, people would have LOVED this album. Stand Up just sounds like that's what they recorded to get the songs and ideas down before a tour. I think Batson had a great idea in spending a day or two with each band member individually.

There's a reason the band members have said in interviews that they don't think this was their best effort.

There's a reason almost EVERYONE doesn't like this record.

There's a reason they abandoned the album almost completely in the live setting.

    It's bad.

End of story. Let's move on.

You're right. That's probably why Everybody Wake Up came back this summer (to many fans excitement), Out of My Hands and You Might Die Trying keep getting major rotation, Dreamgirl, Old Dirt Hill, Stand Up, Hello Again all made appearances in '10. Yeah, the band definitely hates this album.

I'm gearing up for a thread full of puns and fantastic sarcastic comments. That's fine, but at least I pop this band's music on and just love what I'm listening to. Every band has experimented and Stand/Everyday were our band's experimentation days. Accept it for what those albums are or be miserable. But those people, like myself, who understand art, know that these things need to happen. Not every album is going to sound like The Best of Whats Around or The Song That Jane Likes. People get older and grow up and change their views etc. For some reason this community seems to have a feeling of entitlement and seem to think DMB owe us a certain kind of music. Well, as it turns out, they are human and they don't owe us shit. Like it or don't, but Stand Up is a great piece of work from an even better band.

the album sucks. the only good thing about it is ODH, but only in a D+T setting. YMDT is a monster live, but it's boring.

I don't know, whatever you want I guess. Go take a shit, go eat Chinese, who the fuck cares? It's a message board where we're all entitled to our opinions. But you took the time to read it, I didn't make you. But thank you for yet another brilliant piece of sarcasm. Antsmarching.org for the win as the kids are saying these days.

Dave + Tim Old Dirt Hill is what got me into Old Dirt Hill haha. You Might Die Trying was boring in '05 but there's no way the recent versions with Tim are boring.

True with your statement. However, all of the versions with Tim sound about the same...repetitive, boring. The most interesting thing that they did with it once Tim joined was Dave switched to scatting in the outro. Exciting stuff, amirite?

The only thing I'd like to hear would be Steady as We Go. Much better horrible piano song to shove down our throats than OOMH.

I think its decent. Tell me another band that has put out anything that sounds like Stand Up. It's got a lot of parts of songs that I enjoy. The riff to Dream Girl. The melody to Old Dirt Hill, The sax on Stand Up,

I like these songs live: YMDT, Louisiana Bayou, OOMH, ABI.

I don't think it was done without heart. I just think they missed the mark by trying something new. It happens, and looking back I'm glad they made it. I have a lot of great memories listening to that album.

You should get teh Banzzz for using these 3 things together "Louisiana Bayou" "like" "Tripping Billies". Terrible, terrible correlation. Louisiana Bayou could be on Everyday, yes. But to compare and say it has a Tripping Billies vibe is awful I don't even get where you're seeing this? Tripping Billies is on acoustic, fun, upbeat and is about seizing the day. Louisiana Bayou is on the Baritone and has no upbeat quality about it. In addition, the theme is nowhere near seizing the day.

    Horrible thread.
