***Official Alpine Valley 2016 Thread***

Will it be two nights, or three? Will there be camping at the venue? Will they be the best shows of the summer again?

See you folks there.

Tired of the bitching about Alpines attendance last year. Place was electric for sure.

And a caravan multi-act weekend would certainly boost attendance significantly. I'm banking on it for my first Alpine.

People that care about attendance baffle me. I just made a long post in the attendance thread but just to summarize here....WHO FUCKING CARES?

It's also funny how people consider Alpine to be some huge failure, while Deer Creek and SPAC were huge successes, even though attendance for all 3 was virtually identical. (Alpine had slightly more than DC, slightly less than SPAC.)

I am just so glad to be thinking of/planning Alpine weekend here in the dead winter cold of January!!

Alpine and Gorge would be naturals for 3 day Caravans, that require multiple stages.
They have other options in NY area and in the South or Southwest, such as Vegas.
Maybe Watkins Glen will be a Caravan-type festival, too - bigger than just Dave, as has been suggested (Rolling Stones and 1 more major act have been rumored).
I suspect that many of the great Amphitheatres they hit such as SPAC, Deer Creek, and WPB cannot have more than 1 stage, so those will remain 2 night DMB stands, maybe with opening acts this year.
    It should be interesting .....

I could never see camping at the venue and a 3 show weekend would be a long shot but j would definitely love for both to happen. Especially since it's looking like I'll have some SPAC'ers making the trip for the first time this year.

Going to come in this thread, since apparently can't voice opinion about attendance in that thread. I definitely agree with you Ajc about the feel of the Sunday show last year, even in the lots it just felt so much more laid back. Honestly was probably my favorite overall weekend there in about 10 or so years

Andrew I'm in the process of convincing Uncle Ed, Lexie, and hopefully a few others to make the trek this year. Let's link up and figure out hotel/camping accommodations and get them all out here.

I've always camped at Bark River but the last few years it's just been filled with young dickheads who like to steal shit and not handle their drugs properly. Plus I think Uncle Ed would much rather stay in a hotel. Haha.

Doesn't seem to be too popular of a spot on here, but I usually stay in Kenosha right off the highway. Easy drive back from the venue and grocery store right across from hotels to stock up for tailgating

i would love for them to come out there! spac is great, but alpine is so so much fun! i know brad has been, but i don't think any of the rest of them have? i can't remember though. i stayed at a hotel like an hour away last year, but that's only because i made the last minute decision to go. i'll start poking around at accommodations this week sometime!

Previous years when I've met up with groups of Ants I think they stayed at a Holiday Inn right down the road. If I recall correctly it's a straight shot down the highway like 20mins. I'm going to start looking as well for the rumored weekend and may just book a few rooms and figure it out from there.

Made getting out of the lots even easier too. In my opinion tailgating is always a hit or miss thing, all depends on your neighbors. This past year our neighbors didn't really seem interested in talking to anyone but themselves, so was nice that our friends were able to find us easily

I will say it will be scary to see Uncle Ed in an environment where Chicago beer is readily available. We might need a cot to carry him out of the lots on.

I totally agree with everyone about n2. That was the most amazing crowd I've ever been a part of. Simply incredible.

I also don't GAF about the attendance haters. "Bad" attendance at Alpine is a sellout for other venues. I think we proved that a half empty venue at Alpine, beats a full house any where else.

My fiance isn't a Dave fan really at all but I am trying to convert her. I didn't think we would get Halloween after 2 in 2013. She had only been to Northerly and could tell Alpine was different. Thought we were crazy as 80% of people started jumping for Halloween.

The only downer for her was her favorite song You and Me getting cut lol.

The venue that pays the band to fill it so they can make money probably cares.

Selling out a venue is a success. Filling a venue to 57% is not a success.

I'm not sure how that's offensive or controversial. It's pretty simple math.

I think it's generally unreasonable to expect alpine to sell out regularly. If they only booked acts who can sell it out there won't be many if any acts playing there. 40,000 tickets is 40,000 tickets regardless of capacity. Thats a damn good weekend

If you assume all venues pay the same price for acts, regardless of capacity, and assume that all venues cost the same amount to staff and operate, regardless of capacity, I guess that makes sense.

Alpine also doesn't have acts kicking down the door to play there so i think they take what they can get to an extent. Im sure they do better financially a year dmb plays there than one without dmb

Maybe... but if you don't think they're taking those numbers to the DMB camp to negotiate how much they pay DMB to play there, you're crazy. I'm quite sure it's not a feather in their cap that their sales are on par with much smaller venues.

This exactly. I'm no expert on venues, but I have spoken to people that live in the area and work the Alpine theatre and resort. 41 K or whatever people in that little town for the weekend is fantastic. When DMB skipped Alpine, it really hurt those businesses. Summer workers didn't work, income that businesses count on didn't happen: Hotels, restaurants, gas stations etc etc. now if that venue was in a more metropolitan area, it might be different. You have to remember that potentially having 5 whole acts is great for them, they usually host a whopping 3 weekends.

It seems like a pretty symbiotic relationship. East Troy/Elkhorn does well, DMB sells lots of tickets, it's not your average crowd, and it's a really cool slice nature to have live music. Plus the band really loves playing there.

I guess we'll find out in a few days or weeks or whatever if the declining sales have any effect on anything at all.

You will give a shit about attendance numbers when the band decides not to play at the venues you love because attendance is shit. It baffles me that you think it means nothing and shouldn't give a shit at all. Alpine has been on a downward trend every single year since 2012. So has deer creek and spac.
