+1. I very much agree with this. Lyrics have never been integral to the success of the band. To me, DMB music is fun and unique and brings back a lot of good memories of high school, college and time with my friends. I love singing along to the songs but I don’t know if I look to DMB songs for a greater meaning.

Do we want songs that are just passable? Not "great or even good", just ok because of a guitar solo?

Bad lyrics are passable for me if Dave can actually sing them. This is why I dislike Can't Stop so much. I'd tolerate the lyrics if his voice wasn't straining and cracking all over the place on it.

The lyrics to Samurai Cop aren't bad, but the fact that Dave doesn't sing it like he did in Charlottesville anymore (with the falsetto) and now tries to yell to hit that high note irks me to no end. It just sounds bad and he cannot hit it. I still enjoy the song, but I hope he either goes back to the falsetto or changes the vocal inflections on the song a la Stay or Leave when he sang it in 2015 (The Alpine acoustic set version being the best example).

Batson being on it reduces the chances in a big way of it being good

Biggest Factor? Are we talking aside from the overall quality of the individual songs, their cohesiveness in creating an album as a whole, and our subjective enjoyment of them?

good question, I think based on the songs that we've heard so far (IOY, SC, A&A, DYR, B&BB, ViTR, CS, and HoO) it's going to be very summer vibey to me, much like BW

This is interesting take..not saying it's wrong. But for DMB, I think lyrics are extremely important. It seems that the songs most revered in the catalog have above average lyrics.

    Seek Up
    Warehouse
    Cry Freedom
    Last Stop
    Stone
    Dreaming Tree
    Spoon

Those are just a few that come to mind and I feel like most people would have at least half of those in their top 10s.

Is there a DMB tune with strong lyrics that's weighed down by the music? Can't think of one
