Re: Dogs Are The Damn Best
One of our dogs was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. In between the time she got the diagnosis (which was done by removal of one of her lymph nodes), she declined so fast that I almost cancelled an appt with an oncologist. I just assumed we were down to days, maybe a week or 2 at most and didn’t want to waste that time traveling 3 hours. My kid was actually the one that talked me into keeping it… so glad she did. 5 weeks later after of various chemo treatments (14 more to go) and she’s back to her old self again. Maybe even more feisty than she was!
I never thought I’d put a dog through chemo… assumed that quality of life would come into play. But apparently with a lower dosage they don’t get the same severe side effects as humans. So that pretty much sealed the deal… if she wasn’t going to be spending her last days sicker than she was, she deserved to have us try to do what we could. She’s had a tough life… severely overweight when we adopted her and could barely walk a few feet without getting winded. She was just getting into ‘normal dog’ life (lots of ball chasing, long walks, etc.) when we got the diagnosis.
I know her time is still short with lymphoma b/c chemo won’t ‘cure’ it… but hopefully put it in remission for a while. I just look at every day with her as a gift. So no matter how many are left, I’ll be outside throwing balls for as long as she wants to chase em.
