guitar lessons

so i've been playing guitar for about a year and a half, i learned about chords and scales from online lessons (not youtube, about.com i think) and pretty much just started playing songs from there. i can finger and play all the chords, open, barre, power etc.
the problem is that i've never had any formal lessons except for the basics which i've learned online. i understand scales and that songs are in certain keys, but i don't really know how to find out which key a song is in. i also have zero experience with any kind of solo work. so i'm seriously considering putting out the money for formal lessons, but i'm not sure how much i can get out of it.
so how did you fine people of ants marching learn how to play guitar? is it worth while getting real lessons?

I began trying to teach myself to play but once I started taking lessons, I got a lot better and enjoyed playing more. I would say try it out for a few lessons and decide from there.

Lessons really taught me how to mold together all my tidbits of knowledge I'd picked up by teaching myself. It gave my writing in particular a lot more structure as I followed theory instead of simply "what chords sound good together" (although that works too ).

I only took lessons once a week for a semester for a college cred, and it made a world of difference.

I can help you guys, what do you guys want to learn? I can't offer you super video lessons, but I can give you some basic ones on things you might wanna improve upon, whether it's chords, soloing, or developing an ear of some kind.

Also I'm completely self taught using my ear and the internet as well.... there's nothing you can't learn for guitar on the internet. And there's nothing that a guitar teacher can show you that's not on the internet as well. It's really about self discipline and how bad you want to learn to play.

This is also true. For me it's easier to learn by being able to talk to someone but you can definitely learn to play online.

I mean taking lessons is definitely easier, or I'd imagine. I wouldn't know because I've never really taken any formal guitar lessons before.

my thoughts is that it is easier to have somebody point out what you are doing wrong rather than trying to mimic something online.
but reskta, i'm open to anything you have to offer. i'm always trying to get better.

Alright awesome. So do you simply just want to learn how to solo better? Or how to in general? Or how to solo over virtually any song?

    Re: guitar lessons

Alright so let's start with a few ideas before we get into logistical stuff. I'm going to go one post at a time to make sure everyone is caught up before I move on to the next thing. I will also record some clips so that you guys can actually hear what I'm talking about. Also it will be much easier to understand as well.

Pretty much a third of what soloing is... is simply memorizing the scales and modes. All of them. In every key. It sounds hard, or maybe like a lot or memorization, but there are a ton of short cuts I'll show you that will make it x10 easier.

The other 3rd of soloing is simply knowing the context of the song, or you could call the timbre of the song. This is basically the color of it. You could also categorize it by genre. So basically this part is asking "What style of song am I playing in, what mood, and what's the key?" I will explain how to figure out keys in a few posts but I want to get each point down before we move to the next one.

The last 3rd is what separates one guitarist from another... and that's simply phrasing, or learning licks. Licks and phrases are the key components behind soloing, no matter what instrument you're playing. Every soloist in every band that you've ever listened to learns phrases and licks by borrowing them from others, or they've created their own. Sometimes you'll hear two musicians talking about another one and they'll go, "Wow he's got great chops". Chops are usually how difficult the licks are that you are pulling off, but difficult enough where it's not absurd shredding. It fits in extremely well into the song, or simply very tight playing. These could be runs, arpeggios, alternate picking, etc. you get the idea. Chops sometimes are also considered how good your phrases are.

Alright so before I move on do I have any questions, or is this all clear so far?

    Re: guitar lessons

Alright so let's work on each section at a time. To even get started with soloing, you really need to get down the basics in each area in the order that I told you, so we won't get to phrases until after we do the other two sections. Please be patient but I promise you it will be worth it in the long run.

So scales and modes. What are they? Sure people might tell you to learn them, but what's their purpose?

Scales outline melodies and chords. Rhythm and melody are the two most basic fundamental things you can have in music. So learning them is important.

There are certain scales to learn for certain styles, such as middle-eastern music, jazz, blues, etc. but most music is based off of the major scale.

Here is an example of a simple major scale:

    http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/gui...t&t=0&choice=1

That is the C Major scale. It goes from C to C as so:

    C D E F G A B C

Most of you already knew this. It's all the white keys on a piano. But because C major is so easy, we can learn all the modes AND everything you need to know on how to play ANY major scale or mode in ANY key. I am going to eventually show you how.

So you might ask, what the hell is a mode? A mode is when you take a note within an already pre-existing scale, and you play that scale starting on that note and ending on that note instead of the one the scale was originally designed for. Here's what I mean:

    A normal C major scale

    C D E F G A B C

A mode based off of C:

    D E F G A B C D

THAT is a mode. So all the modes you will learn will be based off the major scale.

So each note you pick to start and end on in the major scale has it's own name for a mode. Logically that means there are 7 modes of the major scale, simply because there's a mode for each note, and there are 7 notes.

For C major, this is what they all look like:

    C D E F G A B C

    D E F G A B C D

    E F G A B C D E

    F G A B C D E F

    G A B C D E F G

    A B C D E F G A

    B C D E F G A B

See a pattern? Before I go on to explain anymore, are there any questions? I'm sure some of you guys already know this, but I have to go over it before I can get to the next thing.

    Re: guitar lessons

Each of these modes have different names. Basically you have to memorize them. Memorizing what they are and what they sound like in use are important later in phrasing and the context of the song, maybe even the mood.

Here are all the modes (C major):

    Ionian

    C D E F G A B C

    Dorian

    D E F G A B C D

    Phrygian

    E F G A B C D E

    Lydian

    F G A B C D E F

    Mixolydian

    G A B C D E F G

    Aeolian

    A B C D E F G A

    Locrian

    B C D E F G A B

    Basically:

    Ionian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Dorian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Phrygian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Lydian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Mixolydian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Aeolian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

    Locrian

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

Learn all of these. Get these down. It's key to great soloing.

So here's the huge short cut, or if you completely understand this, the next step will be a piece of cake and you will be able to solo in any key. That's the payoff of memorizing this. It will save you so much time, and you will learn licks and phrases much, much faster. This might take a few tries for me to have you understand, so I will help if you don't get it. However in the mean time, try to follow this:

All these modes are related to the same key, which is C major.

Because they're related to the same key, they have the same notes as the key.

If they have the same notes as the key, they all have the same notes as each other.

IF they all have the same notes.... then these scales can be linked together.

    All of them linked together:

    http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_...t&t=0&choice=1

If you link them together, you now have an ENTIRE fretboard of notes to choose from. The entire neck. And now, you know how to stay in key (C major) perfectly no matter WHERE you are on the neck. This is crucial to actual soloing, if you aspire to actually be good, decent, or great at it. So does this all make sense so far?
