There's plenty of similar artists in the hall, including Traffic...very similar uniqueness, but WITHOUT even touching the same success level.
As we know, DMB have:
- sold 33+ million albums, more than a significant amount of inductees,
- they earned more money than any other band for a decade,
- they've been quite influential (although it's not really obvious outside of the Phillips dude),
- they continue to be high on annual earnings charts,
- have the streak of #1 albums for a band
These are all objective evaluations that should have weight in making selections. Voters for pretty much all artistic awards shows and HoF can be and are lobbied. Some are probably offered incentives for votes. Ideally these voters are looking beyond their preference and at some info that reflects the significance of the artists/bands that have been nominated.
